Title: airbox vs. cones
Description: Want to switch to cones
capymotiv - June 19, 2005 09:08 PM (GMT)
I have a 85 xj 700 with 31,000 miles on it. One of the most reliable vehicles I have owned except for when I ride it in the rain.
I am considering pulling out the air box in exchange for a set of K&N cone filters.
Has anyone done this to their bike yet? I want to do it for 2 reasons.
More power with better air flow, rejetting may be needed and ease of service to the carbs.
I have herd rumors that the cones cause more problems than good.
Any ideas.
Thanks

If you already have problems riding in the rain pod filters will only compound the problem. Riding in the rain with pods is not a great idea as they will soak up the water and it will make it into the engine.
But if you do go this route you will need a stage 1 jet kit, which runs about 100 bucks.
If you have some sort of leak in your airbox it's probably easier to find it and cover it with silicon than it is to get cones.
Good luck either way you go.

pods
I went with the pods on my xj11, I find no problem with rain. You will definately have to rejet. You will also see a drop in mid-range power. This can be over come by raising the main needle a tad. But once you get the jetting down the top end is were you will see the biggest difference. So if your looking for just a light to light bike,i suggest leaving well enough alone, but if you want a kick on the big end go for it. :o as far as rain goes look into the plug wires?

I would recommend this route only if you want the performance boost. If you are having other problems and figure since you have it apart and want to improve things you really want to think it through since you will be introducing new problems into things. If you do go that route however you will probably enjoy the performace when you get things tuned properly.

I am a rather large man 220LBS and do a lot of 2up riding. I don't think it would be smart to loose my low end and mid range right now.
Thank you for your help. I think I am going to stick to the air box.
This will bring up another question I will post seperately.
Again, thank you.
