Title: mirror 'swivels' are weak

rgouette - June 23, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
I'm sure a lot of you have seen or heard of this, but this morning, on my first higher speed ride, the mirrors(left especially) ended up turning in, as the wind speed increased. (The top part of the mirror/adjustable part)

Are these able to be tightned?
Or is that part of the "joint" fixed?
Thanks,
Rich

I have had the same problem with my 85 xj 700.I got into real good and the left mirror rotated on me.Seems silly, I used a oil plug fiber gasket the same size as my mount between the mirror and mount hole to tighten it up some and it works great. The fiber gasket keeps it from rotating and the extra space between the mirror and mount gave me a little more torque room to tighten it down.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Howdy Mike, thanks fer the reply.

I'm not quite sure where & how you applied the 'gasket', but I'd love to understand it better..
If you want to expound, great. Otherwise, I guess I'm buying a replacement, which I sort of don't have $ for right now..

Either way, thanks!!

Go to the local parts store and ask for an automotive oil plug gasket. Make sure to get the fiber one not the rubber. It is just about the same size as the mirror stem mounting bolt. It can then be trim to fit the outer cicumfrence of the mirror mount. Put it between the mirror and the mounting hole. Tighten the mirror to the proper position. The fibers in the gasket will keep it from rotating and will give you more room to tighten it up.
To tighten the mirror to the stem can be a lot more trouble than it is worth. You would need to remove the mirror glass first. The easy way is to apply a little silicone to the inside of the joint and position the mirror where you want it and let it dry. It can be wiped clean before drying so none will show but will limit adjustments after drying.

I know what you did mike. Good idea! but what he's talking about that swivel right at the mirror. not the mounting socket at the bars. But right up against the mirror back. 2 things e-bay or Cycle Salvage Yard. Going rate $10 to $20 + Shipping.

True. When a kid backed into mine in a parking lot, I got a used one at the yard for 5 bucks. The silicone will work if he applies it in the joint he just won't be able to readjust it after it dries. Best to find a cheapy.

Correct. I like th esilicone idea. I dopn't give a hoot about it being permanent: I'll just take some time & try & get the right angle be4 I apply it!

Thanks fellas!!!
