Title: XJ650 Maxim: A few questions
Description: New rider
djfraudulent - July 16, 2005 02:21 AM (GMT)
So, I bought an 82 650 Maxim a little under a year ago, but only recently really started riding it. It's my first bike, and my tech knowledge is, well, nonexistent. So, on to the questions:
1> The gas tank seems a little small. It's fine for commuting, but if I were to try and do any sort of longer ride it seems like stopping every hundred miles to fill up will get pretty annoying. Should I be getting better mileage than that, or do I look into getting a larger tank for it?
2> My idle is really really low. In fact, if I don't have the choke in a little at all times the bike will stall out everytime I stop. What can I do about this? Like I said, I still know very little about bike tech and I'm sure it's a simple answer.
Thanks a lot, I'll be posting more later.

1: Yes, 100 miles to the tank is about right. You should get a little better than that though. this is probably caused by using the choke to keep it idleing.
2:you can adjust your idle to a certain extent by rotateing the knob between number 2 and 3 carb.Move it a little at a time to get it right where you want it. About an 1/8 of a turn at a time.
hope this helps

thanks... going to give that a try tonight.
so, 100 miles per tank, hmm? i guess my next question is, is it possible to get a larger tank so that this bike can be a valid option for long trips, or would i be better off just getting something new?

The 650 Maxim (G, H, LH, & J) has a 3.4 US gallon gas tank. I'm not sure if the 0.8 gallon reserve is included or extra.
I have averaged 45 mpg. 45 mpg x 3.4 gallon = 153 miles per a 3.4 gallon tank of fuel.
More or less. :)

With my 81 650 Im turning to the reserve at 75-80 miles and can ride her to 100 even.
Thats it...

WOW, that seems really bad. Did you rejet your carbs? I have a 750 and get to about 110 before I need to flip reserve and that is City driving. Highway I can get 130 before the light comes on.

I have only cleaned the carbs.
Im a mechanical guy, but I dont know to much about engines such as tweaking the carbs.

On a 650 you should be getting about 48 to 52 mpg. The neat thing about owning the 650 is the 750 tank will slide right on, giving you an extra gallon and much more distance and comes in the same colors. It even makes the bike look better. Gives it a beefier cruiser look.

Would this be the same for the 750 Seca and Maxim? In other words, are the same tanks interchangable between the 650 Seca or Maxim and the 750 Seca or Maxim?

Hey, that's neat..I didn't know that the 750 tank popped right on a 650. I know I want next!
