Title: XJ700Maxim
Description: Starts missing at 5000 revs

whiskeygraham - July 24, 2005 07:25 PM (GMT)
Hi Guys,

Pleeeeease help!

I have an '83 7oo maxim that has just started farting and missing at 5000 revs and above. It is fine up untill then, I have had carbs cleaned and ballanced, as it only happened after I stupidly ran her dry!! But still does the same. any hints would be soooooo appreciated!

Sounds like your balance and mixture is off (both kinda happen hand-in-hand). If that doesn't work - check your carbs - you might have rust in your tank and clogged the float screens.

Another poster had just about the same problem. Look it up, I believe he ended up soaking down his exhaust valves to clean them up and it fixed the problem.

That was me that had the problems at top end. Took off the exhaust and soaked the exhaust valves through the exhaust ports with Deep Creep. Made a world of difference for me. You might also check to make sure you are running the right spark plugs (NGK BP7ES) to ensure the proper heat range of the plugs.

Thanks for the tips so far, sadly I had the carbs off and completely cleaned, so not them. Also changed plugs, to the correct ones , still no joy. I had a compression test done and number 3 pot is well down on compression! Any more ideas???

Put about a teaspoon of motor oil into that cylinder throught the spark plug hole, then immediately do another compression test. If compression improves, you have a ring problem, if not it's in the valves.

Did you try filling that cylinder with Deep Creep and let it set over night? If it is just a sticky ring, you might get lucky and that will free it up. Ditto for a valve, though it is harder to determine which valve (intake or exhaust) it might be.

For compression problems, it only gets more expensive from there (i.e. valve or ring jobs). The teaspoon of oil trick should at least tell you where to focus. Keep us posted.

What does your tach do when it misses? If it goes erratic then it is your TCI. Of course this is assuming you have an electric tach like the 750's & 650's. If you know someone with a good TCI then switch yours into his and see if his gets the same symptoms. This keeps his good TCI safe from any damage. You can repair your TCI by resoldering but I suggest a replacement. They pop up from time to time on ebay.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions, I will let you all know when I have tried them all. I live in the UK and have not heard of Deep Creep, anyone enlighten me?

Deep Creep is sold in an aerosol can and is available at most auto parts stores here in the U.S. under the name Deep Creep. It is made by the same company that makes Sea Foam. If you can't find it in your auto parts store in the UK, their website is www.seafoamsales.com. the stuff is magical.

Hi Guys

Thank you for all the help, I have contacted seafoam and they do not have any sales of deep creep in the U.K. I don't suppose anyone would be willing to mail me a can if I send the money???

ckyle29 - August 4, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
I would, but it is illegal to ship it by postal or FedEx because it is highly flammable, explosive, contains fluorocarbons and depletes the ozone. For these same reasons, I believe it is also illegal to import it into the U.K. without special permission. that might get kind of costly for an $7 can of spray. Have you checked the auto stores there, maybe on of them can get if for you?
