Hi again, I have a 85 xj 700. I found a fuel spec on the cover that states I should be using 91 octane regular (leaded).
Can anyone verify this for me.
Thanks.
As far as I know, all XJ motorcycles use regular unleaded fuel. No exceptions. Anything special about this bike? Why are you asking - running rough?
I am concerned that if I am using unleaded and the spec is calling for leaded, I might be burning up the valve seats, if they are not the hardened type and should be using a lead substitute.. I have also noticed the number 3 cylinder loosing a little compression and trying to work out some gremlins.
91 Octane is correct, but they haven't sold leaded gasoline in the U.S. since the 1970's due to environmental concerns, you have no choice but to run unleaded. Keep in mind this is a Japanese company, so in 1985 they may have still be using leaded gasoline over there, but it was gone here long before then. By the 1980's most companies were using hardened seats to make up for the loss of lead, so you should not have any valve problems using 91 pump gas now.
