Title: tach problem

davidjrmy - March 1, 2005 01:52 AM (GMT)
Hey guys, I have a small problem. My tach is very slow to respond. The colder it gets the slower it responds, until you get down around freezing then it barely moves at all. Anybody ever cracked one open? Can you clean them out with electronics spray or would that even help?

hey david is that electronic or cable driven? I'm not real keen with my lil cousin bikes, (mines 1100 cc). :o I would imagine if electric it could be cleaned and lubed, cable driven too for that matter.

David, what kind of bike do you have?

its an 83 xj750k. I don't believe that it is cable driven

I believe that if you can crack it open carefully you should be able to clean the pivot points of the needle.
CAUTION: Do not touch the hair spring in there.

Same problem here 81 650 Maxim.
I undid cable to change insterment lights.
What should I lube cable with?

Chain lube works really well. It comes in a spray can with a straw, which is relatively easy to get inside the cable sheathing. Once in there it will foam and stay in place.

Start from the top of the cable so that over time gravity takes it's toll in a positive manner.

In a pinch, heavy gear oil (90 weight or heavier) will work, but it's messy. Try warming up the jug of oil in hot water for awhile, this will help it flow into the cable sheath. Once cooled down it should keep a decent film.
