Title: xj650 popping out of first

I just bought an xj650 for cheap, and it runs really well, but it pops out of first if i dont hold down the gear selector(which i know probably isn't good). Someone told me it was probably just the springs connected to the detent plunger, gear selector assembly. But probably could be shift forks as well? if it is shift forks, is there any way to do those without cracking the whole tranny/enging crankcase apart(considering that the tranny/crankcase are one peice)? someone also had mentioned putting it in forth gear and then the shift forks are disengaged from the shift cam. then you remove the shift cam, remove the shift fork shaft, and then you replace the forks throught the pan instead of with the tranny torn all apart. is this true?
