1. I have heard of a way to put rear disk brakes on an xj, something about w wheel from another bike.
2. does anyone have a basic wiring diagram for this bike? (just enough to make it run)
3. does anyone know the size of the stock carbs? i am wanting to put 2 carbs on it to simplify tuning....
4. anyone have pics of a xj that has been chopped?
5. well, i think thats about it for now.
Hey XJ,
1. I can't imagine fitting disc brakes on the rear because of the shaft drive set-up. There's just no way to attach a rotor. Changing wheels to one that would allow mounting a rotor would mean your shaft set-up no longer works or even fits. If you need more braking power, you're far better off changing the front rubber brake lines to stainless steel. I've done it with terrific results. If you've got the itch to try any kind of mod-ing, though, you could change out your front disc(s) and calipers to something more modern.
2. What specifically are you looking for? Is your bike not running now, or are you looking to strip all the electrical bits off and just go with the bare minimum of wiring? Try the XJ CD for answers.
3. Hate to say it, but changing over to 2 carbs is not going to make tuning simpler. Your set-up will be far more complicated in trying to modify the intakes, the air box, and fab a carb rack. Even if it all fits, the mods will have changed the power and torgue curves to the point that the bike may not perform even half as well. Tuning 4 carbs is really not that bad. I've rebuilt mine, including replacement of the shaft seals, and it really only takes a couple of hours from the time you pull the carbs to the time they're back on the bike. There's a reason Yamaha used 4 carbs... I wouldn't mess with it.
4. Nope.
