Title: Can't get it started.
Description: Can't start my XJ750

I need some help... I got my XJCD finally and got to work on my bike... it has been sitting for a while and I bought it without it ever running..( I know I know) but anyway,... I got a battery in it tonight after some other work and tried to at least get it to crank.... nothing....when I hit the start button all my lights went out and I got nothing... not even a sound... any ideas where to look first???? I know it is a long list.... but I am ready for it... I am changing the oil and final drive fluid tomorrow so I will have plenty of time to dig into it... plus I have the other bike for parts if need be. but I have no idea where to start... hey this is my first bike! also... since I had the battery in... I checked all the ligths and stuff(except the oil level light) aand my signals turned on but did not flash... is that right??? and if so,... where do I need to search in the wiring to fix it! thats in advance!

First place to look is the sidestand switch. If it is stuck the bike will do nothing. It is on the kickstand toward the rear. Next thing would be check all battery connections. From the battery to the selenoid to the starter. Of course make sure it is in neutral. I did that once. I fall these check out then it may be the starter relay.
I wouldn't worry about the turn indicaters yet. The new battery is probably not all the way up and low voltage will cause your problem. If they don't work after you get it running then check the connections and bulbs. Either bulb going bad will cause that side to light up but not flash.

Ok... now I feel completely stupid... forgot all about the sidestand switch..   well as soon as the sun comes up I will give it another try... now I hope it is something else so I only feel like 3/4 of an idiot.....thanks for pointing me in the right direction...

p.s. all the bulbs are fine in all four signals... they light up but don't flash...

edit:tried the sidestand UP... same problem...probably a good thing beacause starting up a motorcycle is frowned upon at 2am in my neighborhood.....

to me it sounds like weak battry,
i would try booster cables dunno about u!

also could be bad connections or gronud,
i would clean the ground and all connections i find.

i all that fails try checking to see if starter works
if al that fails let me know if can thinks of something

I agree with Madd Maxx. If the lights go out when you're trying to start the bike and it doesn't even crank I'd check the battery. Do you have a new battery? Usually they recommend charging the battery up until it is fully charged from new. Slow charge the battery (2 amps) over night and try it again.

I had a similar experience. Bike ran fine, then one day hit the starter button and nothing! Started checking right by the numbers....battery....switches...etc.

Turned out to be a loose 4 wire connection inside the headlight. So, the lesson was to unplug then replug and check for start. Took me half a day to chase that down.
