can someoen tell me what each wire going into the key switch is? color and purpose please.
i want to install a universal automobile style key switch (off, acc, ignition, start)
i am building a chopper with this bike and am trying to get as little wiring as possible, thus i am trying to get all the wiring off the handlebars (key, light switches, start button...everything!)......
thanks for any help

Here's a couple of links to some wiring diagrams:
http://zorch.maow.myip.org/bikes/wiring/xj900.jpghttp://www.xjowners.com/tech.htmlThe second link has most XJ's listed.
Depending on what model you have, there may be different numbers of wires and colours, but there should
generally be 4 common wires -
* thicker cored red wire (this is live from the battery)
* brown wire (this goes back to the fuse box to power ignition, etc)
* blue wire (for lights switch)
* blue/red wire (for parking lights)
Hope this helps - best to trace the wires back through the loom with an ohmmeter if your colours are different.

Have you thought about just wiring it from scratch? It might actually be easier, and you could end up with a cleaner system, rather than a butchered one.
From previous posts it sounds like you need very little wiring.
My two cents fwiw,
Jim

Here's another link that might help if you are considering making a loom from scratch:

^^ i would completely rewire it using that diagram, but don't xj700's have CDI's? if not, i will definately do that

got this pic from www.bikebandit.com pretty sure thats a "type" of electronic ignition  aww, shit, might just give it a try anyways, what do i have to lose if everything is fused?

Using the igniter CDI will no doubt make the home wiring a bit more involved. Probably best to "trim down" the stock loom. The guy who wrote the DIY loom link had a good idea - get a photocopy of the original wiring diagram and white out the wires you don't need with correction fluid. This way you should be able to keep the essential wires for the ignition. Just having a quick look at an XJ900 diagram, there's 2 connectors coming out of the CDI unit - a 4 way with 3 wires for the pick-up assembly and a 6 way with 5 wires for the coils and tachometer. Doesn't look that complicated after all.....

are there any diagrams (650, 750, 900, 1100?) that are the same as a 700? i have searched high and low and cannot find a GOOD diagram for a 700
