Looking for some advice on the location of the headlight relay on an XJ550 that I bought the other day.
The bike has at some time been hotwired due to lost keys and subsequently the wiring is a mess. When I picked up the bike the light switch had to stay in the PO position as if it was switched to OFF the starter would engage.
Have spent 2 days rewiring the catastrophic nightmare behind the headlight and the bike runs well with lights working fairly well but when I connect the dash light up the light switch starts kicking over the starter again.
I'm thinking that there may be a stuffed relay causing a short somewhere but my workshop manual (Clymer) doesn't show where it's located.
Any help or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Mark
On my XJ650 it is under the left side engine cover. Don't know if it's the same. Your problem sounds like the ignition switch wiring is still a bit screwy.

Thanks, Will look there tonight. Checked all the ignition wiring and it seems ok. Dismantled the light switch yesterday as it was full of gunge but it didn.t solve the problem. As the starter button is an earth connection to engage I think I'm looking for a short in the light/ignition system somewhere.
