I am in the process of getting a 1984 650 yamaha maxim, according to the current owner this is what is wrong with it:
steering and/or ignition is currently locked and not functional, (you
need to fix this or have someone who can lift it into a trailer, in
order to move it)
rear brakes need broken return spring fixed
one flasher cover is broken
has been parked for about a year
The item in bold is really the only thing I am worried about, I know its hard to try and figure out why something is screwed up without looking at it, but does anyone have any suggestions as far as a quick fix ? (Besides grabbing a hammer)
I dont really expect much considering they are only asking $100.00 cdn for it and I am looking at it as a project, but it would be nice to be able to steer it onto the truck :)
One other quick question, I can find lots of information on 81, 82, 93's but that's where it seems to stop, then continuing onto 85, anyone have any ideas as to why ?
Thanks in advance
The steering lock is built into the ignition switch. Mine's pretty touchy and never wants to lock, but it apears to me that a little pin comes out from the back to lock. To get the switch off I thing you can use a 10mm socket and a wobble head extension(from underneath). Then you should be able to steer it to your truck.
Don't know about spring. I think the turn signal lense will fit from a lot of other Jap bikes. I took one of a friends Kawi parts bike along with my handlebars. After sitting for a year probably needs a battery.
Mine is an 81, I paid $500 us. I was told that it sat for three years. It is a 650 Maxim also. Mufflers are rotten, had to weld the tank, had to re-solder wires inside turn signal controls, front brake master cylinder was stuck, battery only lasted half season, front wheel bearings lasted one season, carbs probably need cleaned and synced. Tends to hurt my back after a few hours on it. However I did like to ride it, seems to have a lot of power for a bike of this size. It also always seems reliable. I would definatly buy another if I had the chance.
