I just bought this bike yesterday.
I ran into a electrical problem with my 1981 xj750 seca, maybe someone could help. I removed the neutral bulb in order to replace it because it did not light up, I checked it in another bulb holder and the bulb was fine. I then noticed that both instrument panel bulbs were not working, but both bulbs were fine They were on the same line as the neutral light. After I reassembled everything I lost all power to the instrument panel, front light, horn and turn signals. The turn signal lights on the instrument panel are still light up though. Starter and rear light still work. I am completely unfamiliar with electrical systems. Does anyone have any advise?
Find out where the power stops... :) multimeter could be helpful.
Where one failed at a time it seems to me a loose connection is worth hunting for. If it were a fuse then all would go at the same time (minus the indicators which are probably on the indicator circuit - not that familiar with the wiring harness)
It would be worth checking/switching the fuse for the dash - if some of the lights come back on you have 2 seperate problems - a break in the wire to the non-working lights, and a blown fuse. If that is the case it is very likely the fuse blew as a result of the damaged wire shorting. That could mean that there is a wire that has been rubbed somewhere. Using the multimeter you can test the connection from the light back to the fuse - probably should unhook the battery for this test just incase you touch across a live wire. If the circuit is broken on any of them you'll find out quickly - can also test across a fuse to see if it still works.
Where is the fuse for the dash located? Is it in the instrument panel or the headlight housing? I checked the one in the headlight housing and it was fine. Thanks.
That is more than I could tell you.. you'll have to look at a wiring diagram (XJ cd)
I'd guess it is either in the console - or under the seat.
A fuse and a loose connector fixed everything but the dash and nuetral lights. Thanks for the help. The bike is at the shop now for the above issues.
