Title: Middle Gear Drain Plug
Description: Where is it?

Blackhammer - September 21, 2005 04:57 PM (GMT)
I was changing the oil in my "new" XJ750J Maxim this past weekend, and was following the instructions in the Yamaha Service Manual.

1. I can't figure out where the middle gear drain plug is to drain the oil out. I found the main oil drain plug by the oil filter. Anyone can help me?

2. I woefully discovered that the oil filter bolt was rounded off. After a few hours and little luck with 2 different vice grips, I still do not have it off. Does anyone know of an aftermarket supplier of this bolt? My closest Yamaha shop is about 40 miles away.

Did not get a chance to open up the tachometer yet, as this took precedence....

I saw an aftermarket oil filter bolt at a MC shop in MA of all places. (I'm from NS, Canada and desperately needed a new tire on the way home - went to a BRILLIANT shop near Acton. )

I beleive it was made by EMGO. Can't comment on quality of build but it was cheap, and claimed to fit a number of XJ model bikes.

The middle drain bolt is a bitch to find - It is on the rear side of the engine, up on the backside ABOVE where you'd expect to find it (on the bottom is where I was looking.) It is off center to the left (shifter side)... I seem to remember it being a different size head than the front oil filter bolt.

Cheers,
woot.

Try this catalog, page 10 of the pdf (for some reason the XJ is listed in what appears to be the Kawasaki colum... have to print it to read it yourself.

I rounded my oil filter bolt's head so nicely I was then able to put threads on with a die, and thread a nut onto it. Then I welded them together, and had something to wrench on.
It isn't pretty - but it worked. Once off, I noted that there is an o-ring on that bolt, and it hadn't even melted. But a new one comes with the filter so I would have been OK.

I usually in this case just get a nut and tack weld it right on the oil filter relief valve bolt that is rounded off. if you do it nice you will be able to use this one for years. They do make one with a larger size head on it. If you use a 12mm one be sure and use a 6 point socket on it for removal.
