Title: Controls/Instuements issues
Description: What are all the buttons for??

JBCahill - September 27, 2005 05:27 PM (GMT)
I have a couple issues centering on the bike's controls. First, the instuement panel works, with the exception of the speedometer. Tach works, although I'm uncertain as to it's accuracy, as it reads higher than the sound would indicate. Cables all seem to be hooked up, and I don't see any obvious wiring faults, although I haven't tested with any sort of gadget, as that's like magic to me...

Otherwise, one of my biggest current issues is simply identifying what things are for. Do I have two kill switches, and what is the correct position? My choke seems to work as an "idle adjuster" when I'm sitting there and it idles extremely high, but I don't know what would be the "on" vs. "off" positions. I believe I've identified the high-beam switch, but since it doesn't work, I'm not sure...

Does anyone have a diagram of all the buttons/controls, and does anyone have any ideas on the speedometer?

Thx.

This next comment isn't meant to be rude, just something for you to consider. Have you taken the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course (or equivalent) yet?

I could describe the buttons and levers, however, really if you don't know what they do I worry that perhaps you might not know some of the other details... like how to counter steer etc.

On the left:
Horn is the button
Toggle is the indicator
Lever is the clutch
slider is the choke

On the right:
Lever is the front brake
Button is the starter
Grip is the throttle
Knob is the kill switch.

Center:
The key puts the bike in on/off/ [park]

To start the bike - FINEC

Fuel - turn the fuel on
Ignition - turn the ignition on
Neutral - put the bike in neutral
Engine - turn the kill switch off
Choke - adjust the choke (depending on weather/climate you might need full choke to only 1/4 choke)

When you are ready - hand on clutch - press the starter button.

To adjust the idle. Get the bike warm and the choke off. Under the engine is a turn knob to adjust the idle speed - it should idle somewhere between 1600-2000 rpm. Mine is ~1600

When you have too much choke on it will idle fast. Turn the choke down incrementally until it idles properly OR start the bike and start riding. Adjust the choke to the off position in the first mile.

Thanks for the input. Never is it rude to make polite suggestions. My riding experience is about as old as the bike, and overdue for renewal. We have a different setup for safety courses here in CA, but I'm in the pipeline for that, naturally.

Meanwhile, I've determined that my speedometer problem is a cable issue, so the next step will be finding a way to calibrate it, and the suspicious tach. As for the controls, I had stumbled onto the brake/throttle/clutech/ignition when I was 15 or so, but was uncertain mainly as to the choke and left-hand toggle. Thanks for your suggestions on those as well.

I suppose I should have given a little more context to my questions. In any case, I appreciate the reply, as well as this site.

Thx
