Is there any maintenance reqiuired for a shaft drive? I have never had one before and I am still trying to obtain a service manual for my bike.

You should lube the rear spline of wear the axle meets the rim - I do this when change the tire... not sure if that is frequently enough
You also have to change the rear gear oil - it's in the manual - dump it out and fill it up...
Other than that I don't know.
Thanks ... this just clarifies the need for the manual. I will hopefully have a service manual in the near future.
Changing the rear tire ... I do not want to try that at this time.

Rear tire isn't too bad to remove. You drop the rear down * and undo the axle - it slides out pretty well - pull the wheel off and there it is - nice heavy gear grease the spline.
The service manual isn't too bad (might be on the cd - 10$) - I also have the haynes manual which shows more detail... the back of the regular manual has the service schedule.
Woot.
* To drop the rear I personally put blocks under the center stand. Undo the suspension mounts to the swingarm. Let it drop down out of the mufflers way. Undo the axle. (The reason I have to drop the rear is the muffler is right were the axle bolt/cotter pin is)
