Recently acquired a fuel tank from a 750 to install on my 650, just to have greater range. It has a fuel gauge sender, and so now I am wondering if anyone has some simple ideas about something I could make up to put on the dash, like maybe a low fuel warning LED. I would prefer more advance warning than having the bike sputter and me having to fumble for the fuel petcock.
I understand electronics well, but don't want to do a lot of work.
The sender must just be a variable resistance - but does the resistance go up or down as you run low on fuel? You would think I could put some fuel in and measure it wouldn't you?
But it's presently at the bodyshop getting painted, and it could be there for quite a while knowing that guy.
So, any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim
Hrm - that's a nice to know fact.
I think you'd be best served to get a gas jug and a multimeter. Fill the tank and read it. Empty it as far as it goes on main. Measure it. Measure the Fuel. Turn it to reserve. Empty it as far as that goes. Measure it. Put half the fuel back in and measure it again.
Then you'll know what it reads at empty, really empty, half full and full. :)
Now - duct tape the multimeter onto the dash ;)
You could probably use on of those LED tachometer gauges ( green, yellow, and red light bar) for a visual cue - or just have a dumbie light that turns on just before reserve. You could also get a 750 dash and pull out the bits you needed.
Don't know anything about wiring - so I just learned where the petcock was ;)
Wonder if you could use a XS1100 tach with the built in fuel Gage?
