Title: source for yamaha tank emblems?

iczer - October 25, 2005 07:20 PM (GMT)
Was wondering if you folks knew of a source for new yamaha tank emblems for my 81 xj650(thetype that screw on)? Mine are cracked and faded badly. Also, a question for those who have shaved the emblems. Did you fill the dip behind the emblem with weld, or just filler? Professional or DIY?

Try this site. https://www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-accessories...category_id=8.2

Only know of one guy who filled in his 650 tank and he used filler. Bondo I think. It has been holding for a year in the Texas sun. So should work. I believe Bondo recommends a max depth of 1/4 inch.

thanks for all the replys...
So, Is it easier to debadge the 750 maxim tanks?

Yes it is. The 750 emblems use double tape. It can be sawed off with dental floss. This leaves the tank nice and smooth with no need for filler. I never put mine back on since I thought the tank's lines were beautiful without them.

Doing the same thing right now - switching from a 650 to a 750 tank on my 83 XJ650 and removing the badges. I already had taken the Maxim badges off the side covers which I thought looked better so now it will be altogether badgeless.
The guy at the bodyshop where they are painting the tank right now said he did this once with some Yamaha he owned, and even filled in the name on the end cover on the engine (with bodyfill). Everyone then thought it was British.

Hmm... Guess I will be getting a 750 tank then. Will the seca tank work? I know I can get a seca tank, but I am not shure the seat sits against it right. A maxim tank will be a bit more of a challenge to find locally. oooh, and the added fuel capacity! :)

Other than the 750 tank idea (which I think is brilliant - if anyone has a spare 700/750 tank that is clean and dark/black I'd be interested) I have heard that the badges off the golf cart also work - same design as the 650 and much cheaper.

Otherwise you could repair them - there was an FAQ article about how to repaint them in such a way they really did look new again. Goldleaf might also work.

A seca tank will not fit on a maxim...

Woot.
