I tried checking the online micofiche but couldn't tell.

Are the carbs the same on the 81 and the 82 xj650 maxim?

Well I'm pretty sure they are but need some help. I know the '82 had Hitachi HSC 32 carbs. If you have the '81 and it has Hitachi's then they are the same. You could even get the carbs off of a 81-82-83 Maxim or Seca and just put your jets in. Just trade out the main jet from the float bowl and the needle from the diaphraghm. The idle jets are all .40.

I got back to my haynes manuel today and yes the 81 & 82 carbs are the same. One correction to my post is that the idle jets are .40 on US models while the UK models had .43's. Other than that they will change out.

Thanks for the reply, and just today my haynes manual shows up. My bike is an 82 but I was watching a set from an 81 on ebay going for $9.90. Considered getting those as an extra set to play with.
