Title: Steering bearings?
Description: What year used tapered roller bearings?

Ballinger - November 23, 2005 04:31 AM (GMT)
I have a detent in my steering and need to replace the bearings. Other sources say use tapered roller bearings but didn't say what year used them.

My bike is an 82 xj650.

Any suggestions?

I know that they make the Smooth Steering Bearings for the xj750's 81 to 83 the price i payed was $59.95 from oldbikebarn.com but they did not seem to have them for the xj650. But on the other hand if they made them for the 750 it makes sense that they would have made them for the better selling 650. On top of this they didn't sell any Steering Bearing kit for the XJ650 and I know that All Balls makes a kit for the xj650. They do sell the all ball steering bearing kit at http://www.bikebandit.com that they sell for $37.76. If I where you I would keep looking because some where out there there is a Smooth Steering Bearing kit for the XJ650. You may also want to take a look at http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/XJ650.htm lots of advice on upgrades and so on for the xj650.

Depending on where you live, you might want to take the stock bearings to a local bearing house and see what they recomend to replace/upgrade what you have.

I put a set of NSK taper roller bearings in my 1983, 900 Seca. The bill was $46.50 CAN. When I ordered them, the guy on the phone asked if I was fixing a motorcycle. I guess these are bastard size bearings or something. They end with the letters XJ, so I am wondering if they were specially made for this purpose.

Bearing numbers are NSK 32005XJ, and NSK 32006XJ, if that helps anyone here. the "06" bearing was 10 cents more expensive, lol. Those numbers are for the roller and cone together by the way. One is a bit larger than the other.

I think the bikes shipped with regular bearings - however - the tapered bearings aparently are better...

I would like to replace mine as I do have some notches now and it is supposed to make it feel new again.

--- Current projects that need funding ;) ---

Rear suspension

New exhaust system (definately the crossover back... the headers aren't too too bad)

New out o-ring for the oil filter

Aftermarket mirror stalks - the seca bars on the maxim make the mirrors useless - I need to bend them either out or forward to be able to use them.

Make my spare seat into a saddleSore compatable seat - might get time to do this over the winter.

Partsnmore just got a shipment so mine are on order.

Thanks again,
