Title: newbie has a battery hookup question on cables
Description: need advise so I can ride

Hey all,
I bought a 1980 Maxim 650 last year, but tore a leg muscle and have not been able to ride it until now. However, the battery was dead so I removed it at night in the dark and had it charge.
When I removed the battery, I wasn't paying attention to the wiring like a dumbo, and now need your advise.
There is the hot and ground wire cables that hook to the battery (no brainer).
However, there is one extra cable that's dangling and I don't know where it goes, but I assume it hooks to the + on the battery.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could confirm and advise.
Thanks!

What is the colour of the wire?

It's a black cable similar in size to the cables that hook to the battery. The open end has a conntector that would fit into the screw that attaches to the battery.
Do you know if there is more than one cable attaching to the + battery? I'm only used to seeing the ground and hot on battery's for other bikes.

The black cables are usually ground. There is only one cable each side on my battery (82 XJ 650). Are you sure that it is not an earthing point from some other component?
