Title: o.k. more wierdness from the 'ole xj650
chrismeyer - April 5, 2005 03:44 AM (GMT)
O.k.,here's the update and the theory.
The xj starts, and runs....o.k. o.k.,let me first say that the air box is empty and there are no "intake manifolds"you know, those rubber boots to the carbs.
SO,when I go out of the driveway it woon't go and loses all power.
BTW,if you have a bad plug cap,a little copper wire up where the plug goes into it works like a charm.
Anyway,my theory is that there is obviously too much air right now and while it will start and run,it is flooded with air.The plugs are also getting fried so this seems to be causing flooding when I'm gassing it and holding the starter button to get it to start while it's taking in more air than a bug on your windshield at 80 MPH.
Any one agree or disagree?
I need to buy the parts that are missing and I believe that I'd have a great bike.

Seems like a reasonable diagnosis.
But if the bike is running lean it should run better when the choke is on. Is that the case? If not you probably have a dirty carb issue, possibly a stuck needle or float.

Yep,choke makes it go better, and the carbs are freshly cleaned!

I don't know if the boots and air filter from a 750 seca will fit or not, but I've got some sitting in my garage along with a K&N filter that has about 5000 miles on it (airbox too for that matter).
Find out if they will match up, and I'll send 'em to you for shipping cost.
It's spring Amigo, get that thing on the road!

p.s. What did you ever find on that misfiring anyway?

i agree, to much air... had the same thing happen on my gs750 :ph43r:

Hey eatatjoz,I just sent you a PM on those parts and I really appreciate that!
BTW the misfiring thing is a bad plug cap.
I took the cap off and cut back the wire, put IT to the frame and it fired great. So since I didn't have immediate access to a new cap,I out some copper wire in a little ball in the end the plug goes in and put it back.Guess what?Yep,it fires now.Good temp fix untill I get it running good, then I'll go get my second set of plugs in a couple week, and get some new plug wire and four new caps.(just to be safe)
The guy at the dealership said that the wires have to be ordered WITH a coil($150),but that I could get any good auto wire from Autozone or where ever and just use that! What's that like a few dollars?
Anyway,I told him I wouldn't tell his boss he said that!
So that's where I stand right now,if I had those boots and filter.I'm SURE it would run right.
I saw a guy on Ebay selling his ride and he said all the things I've told ya'll about how mine's acting and the pic of his bike showed that he didn't have his boots either BUT in another pic,THERE THEY ARE!So I wrote him and told him he should put all that back on the bike and try it,and he wrote back and said he'd never thought that would cause it to not run.I guess he's new to bikes too.
I'm hoping he writes back to tell me how that went.
Get back to me on that stuff,I can't wait to get it!
