Hey all,,lemme start by saying Im new to this site, and I think it rock that there is one designated for our bikes. I bought my first bike 4 years ago, a 1983 Midnight Maxim, for a Fender guitar amplifier and 300 bucks. Been all the way from the U.P. of Michigan to the smokey mountians of Tennesee on it with minimal problems. However, now I want to use the motor and build a custom chopper. The problem that I have, is that I cant find a custom frame for a shaft drive motor, and even if I did it would reduce my options as far as customizing. So my question is this,,is it possible to convert it to a chain drive,,or even better,,a belt drive?

aahhh chopper the dreaded chain conversion ??? If you find out how without selling your first three kids fill me in. I belong to the xs-xj owners ass. also, and that is the mother of all problems. A few people have actualy done it but know one knows how to get ahold of them. Ya i'd like a fat 300 series tire too,but in all honesty you'd have to win the lottery to pay to have it done correctly. Last pics i saw the guy machined away the casting on the mid gear box to allow a chain to go around a sprocket, but he never came back to let us know if it worked or not. start by extending the shaft out away from the mid gear out however far you want for tire clearance, but then i also heard the gear there turns the wrong direction to spin a tire, aaaahhaaa i don't know   :( i do play the lottery so maybe one day.

The only reason I opted out of the conversion on my chop that you saw in the intro section is because its a royal pain to do. From what I was told, you can take a bevel box from an XJ 1100 (chain drive I believe) and start adapting from there.
I never really followed through with anything after a guy on another board told me it would be easier to go the route I'm going.

Listen, its gonna be at least June before I get the bike done, but when it is, I have tried to talk the guys at the shop into creating the spacer deal as a kit that we can sell as a shaft extension. Believe me, when its done you will all be informed of what I and they can try to make available.

Talk soon boys, keeping busy here....
