I have a 82 maxim that I bought 9 years ago. It was running for ~2years then I put it in storage. I decided to fix it up and start riding again but I can't seem to keep it running. It has new fuel and a clean fuel cock but when I go to start it I need the choke on full and the throttle full out to keep it at 2000 rpm. When I release the throttle it dies. It also seems to be leaking fuel out of the bottom from a hose but I can't tell from where. I opened up the air cleaner and found the filter soaked with gas. What did I do wrong? Can anyone help me?

sounds like a stuck float to me. Its alowing gas to get through and into your air box, would also explain it not wanting to keep an idle. Hows the oil level? a lot of times gas will also fill the crank case when that happens.
Check out the carb cleaning guide in the links. You'll need a YICS tool, carb sticks, and colortune to do it yourself, but since the tools cost $200, and a tune-up at a local garage cost you $250, the choice is clear.
Besides, once you own the tools, you'll be able to do your own tune-ups in the future. ;)
Those carbs have to come off...
problem #1- you have to run it with the choke on because the pilot jets are clogged up, There's a insuffecient amount of gas going through the idle circuit.
problem #2- Stuck float. Once you've got it running for a little bit the vaccume opens the pitcock and lets gas into the carb. The float needle isn't seating correctly and allows the gas to bypass into the overflow tube.
Take 'em off, clean them THOUROUGHLY, and put them back on. Then put a filter between the pitcock and the carbs so that you don't have to fight it again when sediment starts flowing through the line.
