Title: Old vs New
Description: '80 650 vs. '81-82 650

Does anyone know the primary differences between the 1980 XJ650 Maxim and its offsprings from 81-83? I'm picking up an '80 and wanted to know which parts would be interchangeable. For that matter how closely related is the Seca to the Maxim? If I sound like a rookie, I am. This will be my first bike and first restoration.

Yikes!

I don't think that there is too much difference over the 650 range. The Seca (I believe) only differs from the Maxim in body work.

The main difference with the 650s is the YICS port in the engine.
All of the engines from 1982 on have a long tube that connects the intakes.
Other then that the engines are identical as far as I know.
If you haven't done so yet I would pick up the XJCD from the xjowners mailing list it is chock full of info that would surely be beneficial during a restoration.

Oh and good luck. B)
