Unless there is internal damage the motor should be fine. Bad electricals doesn't mean the motor is ruined. We just need to find the problem.

Starter motor I assume; not engine.

The starters for all the 650/700/750 series are the same.

Have you torn the starter motor down for inspection? They can be rebuilt (though it's not economical if it needs rewound, given how many used ones are available).

After reading about that guys electrical problem maybe mine will be a snap! I have the same click from the start button. But according to my schematic there is an oil level switch that I cannot seem to locate on this bike. (86 xj700X) and so you know, I bought this bike in a basket. So I am putting it together from scratch. I have everything functioning except the start button and it is driving me crazy!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I took it fully apart and gave it a good solid clean and replaced the brushes / whole internal part where the brushes sit. It worked again for about 3 days and then died again.

I took a think piece of insulated wire from the battery positive and touched the connection to the starter motor and not only did it not start but the wire started getting very hot. Indicates to me that the coils just aren't getting or using the electricity thus it's overloading the wire. Probably the reason why two solenoids have burnt out.

I'm pretty sure it needs to be rewound.

Any relay can be bypassed if you trust yourself enough.

    ddecdoc,

The oil level switch is on the bottom of the oil pan, and hidden from view by the exhaust collector. It has nothing to do with the ignition or starter system.
Start a thread so we can diagnose your particular problem.
