What did you do to your Yamaha today?

    I could not of done this rebuild with out the guidance and suggestions from those of you who are gracious enough to share their sometimes hard learned experience.

    Yes as soon as I got home from school I moved everything out of my way and got the bike out for a ride at dusk. Oh was it enjoyable, as mentioned before need to fine tune a few things to tidy her up. Either I had forgotten how she pulled or she is running Hella good because she pulled all through the gears and RPMS. Not balls out but nice and steady. Quick jont onto the freeway 3 miles then off the freeway. Looking forward to Thursday when I go for a ride over the Oregon/California pass to set the rings. I think my elevation where I sit is about 1380 ft. and the Siskiyou pass is close to 4,310 ft. This should be enough to put a load on her and set those rings.
    Going to run her up to 70% of peak power then back off for a bit then run her up again. I am not going to sit at one speed and cruise, my understanding is by just cruising at one speed does more harm to the engine.
    Also every time I stopped I got aroma of freshly painted engine parts LOL, Seems to be holding together (the Paint).

    And one more thing how to that this dont have numbers. They are three in the midlle for exhaust,out sides have number y285

    Ok,i reasembel the head with cams and measure space ,and on all four exhaust i have 0 space and on a itake on all four a lot i think somebody fail reasembling when they fixing crack on head.it is posible that are on intake with number 285 all four,and on exhaust 2x270 and 2x275 .

    Do a search for how to use a wire or zip-tie to hold the valve open. Simple technique.

    I see it,but i must i think change all 8 shims so is easier and faster to take cams off,i hope.heehhehehe i will try tonight and report .

    yep, your call. It is tedious, rotating the crank around to do all the checks and replacements. You really do need the cams in place for checking clearance.

    For heaven's sake, don't remove the cams!! Use the cable tie method referred to above and look at the following link on how to remove the shims. The tool shown in the link is often hard to use, so even though I have one I usually use a piece of thick electrical wire as shown in the link. One thing that might not have been mentioned in Bigfitz's link is that you will need to rotate the bucket until the notch in the bucket is in the proper position to insert a small screwdriver in to pop out the shim, which you can see in his picture. This is really a simple process, it just sounds hard.

    yeah zip tie method works grreat.
    don't forget that your tools for removing shims CANNOT be magnetic

    Factory service manual states to use a magnetic pick up tool, works like a charm once shim is popped.
    fumbled with tweezers and forcepts pain in the ass magnet pick and lift done in seconds.

    just make sure that cam chain holes are protected with rags so if you drop shim it does not fall down the hole, you would do this no matter what method you chose to grab the shim

    Just make sure it is a new one kept clean and stored to keep chips off of it

    I coulda swore the manual I went off of said non-magnetic tools. IIRC it was so that you don't accidentally magnetize the shim.
