Cold and rainy all weekend. Lubricated cables with the Motion Pro cable lube tool that just came. Took some fiddling to get it adjusted right, and it makes a mess at the user end, but it does the job.

Clutch lever has no more "creaking" and pulls really easy. Throttle cable was smooth, but now it should remain so.

Weather cleared this morning, drove to work. However, may have to leave it home at lunch as rain forecasted again for later this afternoon. AARRG.

Remember you may be able to cover a lot of changes with the "shim shuffle" - i.e. make the changes in an appropriate order so that when you take one out, you move it to another to bring it to spec, then move that to another, etc. The most I've ever had to buy at a given valve adjustment session is 2.

To do this, you need to start by not only measuring clearance, but pulling each shim to see what is in there. After that, you keep records for the future of what shim is where.

Measure in metric, do it all in metric. Converting around is introducing points where error can easily happen. A set of metric feelers is like $5.

Took my carbs to church on Sunday. Let them soak in chem dip for a few hours before giving them a good scrub in water to remove all the chemicals. Ordered a new set of pilot air jets from chacal due to the PO being a little too aggressive with them.

    Bike is almost complete.

I re checked my findings on my shims and this is what I find. When I checked the first time after reading the how to here and left the cam lobe up 90* a lot of my measurements were out of spec, but if I start checking the clearances right after the lobe leaves the shim most of the time I can get it to check in spec somewhere as I rotate the cam around. Example on my #1 exh at the lobe 90* from shim I get .10mm which is out of spec but if I check at different places as that cam rotates I did find .13mm which is in spec, Do I dare use these newly found within spec measurements I found. Original checks found only 1 within spec, 2nd time I did the check only 2 were out of specs.

    No.

Measure the clearance from the shim to the cam when the cam lobe is 180 degrees - pointing directly away - from the shim. They're machined to be measured in this way, and the measurement from other parts of the cam may not be correct.

It's entirely possible that the PO did it incorrectly, and that you'd get "perfect" clearances measuring from whereever he measured from, but the manual is very clear about measuring when the lobe is 180 degrees from the shim, so do it from there.

@cruzin welcome to the site. Its not my job to play moderator but you have turned this thread into your personal valve adjustment thread. You should start a new thread for your bike. This one is meant to be more of a general interest thread.

FYI I was able to find xj shims at the local BMW dealer. They still use them for current BMW models where as Yamaha does not.

ok thanks. that answers my question about the lobe position. Ill let this die here in this thread as was mentioned to me that its not the place for me to go through my valve setup. not a problem ill be starting my own thread.

Can't believe that I am going to share this ROTFLMAO-
Pulled in my parking area was backing up and I stepped on the flipping cats tail and proceeded to fall right the Freak over! well about 45 degrees till the wood pile caught me. No damage other then my ego/pride
When I got sorta off the bike I was pinned between the bike and the wood at knee level so I had no leverage to lift without the possibility of straining my back.
So what did I do I started to chuckle as I dialed my wife's number to ask for assistance and then it was over as she gazed at her pinned husband l slightly laughing as she says you know your never going to live this down and oh let me get a pic real quick don't go anywhere as I looked at as if I could move.
    Fun Times everybody
unfortunately the picture was a blurr or I am sure she would had it enlarged and framed for the garage.

Very nice picture. I appreciate the way you used the backdrop of the water to enhance the beautiful machine you have there.

I just noticed that your gloves are more suited for the cold weather. It's still cold in Nova Scotia ?
