Okay so we are still here..the rapture did not happen and the planet nibiu that NASA said does not exist did not hit earth.:):D My HHR failed emision test code po172...changed every sensor and fuel injector...took to stealership they claimed bad gas wanted 569$ to drop tank and flush..then they would flush tank...haha for 6 months of bad gas.Told then to pack sand. What ever they did it now has 0 codes but had 2 evap and CAT not ready...you have to drive alot to get this to clear so drove to James Dean fesitival in Fairmount Indiana 160 miles one way...really wanted to ride..saw lots of cool cars and some great bikes BSA's and real Indian motorcycles. Checked computer when we got there still showing 2 not ready..got home and Only showing evap not ready...was told if this is showing car will pass...fingers crossed Monday. Almost dark took bike out for a short spin..fall is in the air leaves are turning..could smell the corn and temp went from 90 to 70 all was good enjoying the ride breathing in all the scent...until the dead racoon pungent oder ruined the moment:rolleyes:

I squished a skunk the other day. It was at the very end of my ride, homeward bound. I had to keep driving for a few more miles to keep from bringing the stank home. I never actually smelled anything, but as an excuse to ride longer, it didn't stink either!

Years ago... I was riding along a creek looking for places to fish. I ran over a rabbit. I checked my mirrors and didn't see it in the road... thought maybe I just clipped it and it was OK. Several miles later, I see a nice pool and pull over to fish. Get off the bike and after a few seconds start smelling that pungent "burning hair" smell...and hear sizzling. I go to the front of the bike, and there's the rabbit's head wedged between 2 of the head pipes. what was left of his body was dragging on the road and pretty torn up. I tried to get him out with sticks but eventually had to just grab it and pull. Glad the creek was nearby to wash up afterwards.

ran over a skunk on your bike?! Skunks are not small critters, that must have been more than a little terrifying.

I had a buddy riding his Honda CB 750 with the comstar mags he was doing about 20 mph ...a squirrel runs at his front tire and made it through and ran off , scared my friend but sure that critter had a tale to tell . We used to laugh about it he thought about putting a squirrel sticker with a half a line on his tank .:p

I could paint a cow and a squirrel on my 83 XJ550, the only two animals I've hit in 32 years of driving it. Fortunately never had the bike down, and no damage.

The relative speed with the cow was about 1-2 mph as he was at a full trot in the middle of the road when I rounded a bend. Ran into his back end, he jumped off the road, I stayed up and pressed on.

However, when I saw the cow after coming around the bend, my life flashed before my eyes ....

I came up on a bull moose standing in the middle of the road once. My bike was all red, not sure if this triggered any anger in him but he stared me down and started snorting. It seemed like he was getting ready to charge when my girlfriend at the time rode in to the rescue. Once he saw the 2nd bike he sauntered off into the bush. Scared me shitless.

Moved the oil cooler from my ‘85 XJ/FJ’s old engine over to my rebuilt ‘89 Radian engine. Curious to see the difference it’ll make - the new engine’s been running a bit hot but it prolly has as much to do with the new rings as it does the lack of an oil cooler. We’ll see.

Engine guards came off a Maxim. The previous owner kept them when he sold his Maxim, thinking he'd put them on his next one. They've been sitting in storage.

    There's a nice, little "750" stamped on them. :)

That indicates they were for the XJ750 Seca models............there were 3 different versions of those guards made.

Love how they match with the valve cover design. Now I'm all jealous, as I just have the boring round bar engine guards :)

Then I'm guessing the u-bolts hanging off them were to make them work on the PO's Maxim.

That's the original mounting hardware, actually............goes around the frame tube.

They look great, as noted, due to their design, but as a "crash guard"...............they leave something to be desired!

Good score! Those are for a 750r. There were also ones made for the 900. Your's should have a 750 (maybe even 750S ) stamped on the mounting plate felt surface on the inside surface. They are obviously for the 750r .......can tell by the rounded braces. The 900 braces were straight diagonals. If you look in my Unobtanium forum, you can see the differences.

There's also a set made for the 650 Seca models, and if I recall correctly, they don't have any size marking on the back. I think the 650 sets were the first design made (and hence, un-marked) as they actually "match" the bike side profile (they match the footpeg holders in appearance).....and then they got the clever idea to modify their original design and make them for the XJ750's and XJ900 models, too.

They were made by a company called The Rack Factory out in California, which surprisingly was still in business until very recently, but they no longer produced the brackets nor did they want to talk to you about them, either.............

Might wanna sit down for this one... I actually put life on hold this morning and got the carbs back on my bike. 46F this morning, no hair dryer or heat gun - my wife looked at me cross-eyed when I came inside doing my happy dance. It wasn't until I walked towards the bike with rack in hand that the thought of the ambient temperature struck- I did put the air box boots in the sun to warm up a bit.

Either I am really lucky or I have had my carbs on and off too many times. o_O

Slowly recovering from a week of horrific plague level flu - there's nothing quite like the "your kids are back to school" plague! Got my original valve cover - refinished, painted, polished, and coated last week - baked off to cure the paint. Looks marvelous, but not up to braving the cold and rain to install it right now.

Also polished up my old tail light lens, dry fit it and the housing (formerly the box behind the seat) together to ensure the sugru rubber seal works to provide a seamless "it was made this way" fit, just need to get some more paint to finish it up. Kind of excited to get it done and FINALLY have no more blinky dash light of annoyance... And have a "stock-like" custom rear tail light to match the "stock-like" custom headlight. Should have done this from the start, but it's a lot more adventurous than my usual schemes.

Yes. S. Stupid iOS update has me fat-fingering everything.

Does that S actually refer to anything? I might have thought they'd used the letter that corresponds to the model.

Replaced the fork oil seals and started rebuilding the front brakes. Besides the glass and old rubber lines everything looks to be in really good shape.

The POS circlip plyers I bought from Crapy Tire are useless but what should I expect when I buy tools from a store I call Crapy Tire. I'll be looking for a decent pair today so I can remove the MC piston.

I'll have to drive the car to work today. I don't feel nearly as bad-ass in my Ford Escape though.

STOP DO NOT try to remove piston out of caliper with any type of pliers , channel locks etc ...you will end up gouging piston even if you put a towel around it. Use an air compressor at banjo fitting and an air nozzle ...if that does not work a grease gun without nozzle will thread into banjo fitting hole pump it full of grease it will force piston out of bore ...yes very messy and you have to clean it out ...but works like a charm ..did both of mine this way. Seals in the calipers were toast think original from 82. If you gall the piston this will end up causing problems with the seal .

Yes, sorry, I got lazy and put MC instead of master cylinder. I haven't gotten to taking the calipers apart yet but I will be careful not to damage the piston. I will try the compressed air at the gas station :)

Bought a decent set of snap ring pliers and was able to remove the master cylinder piston no problem. The right tool makes all the difference.

I also learned how to spell 'pliers'.

If that pic is before cleaning then you are in luck. Most times we pull them out they are filled with a brown jell like substance that used to be brake fluid.

Yes, so far everything is in really good shape except for the sight glass. At 32 years old though it would have been foolish to replace the lines and the glass and not replace all of the wearable parts.

Had a bad day at work come home... walked in garage and smelled gasoline with a small puddle under bike...filled up a couple of days before I filled it up too much was running down side of tank  ...wife cooked dinner and made chocolate cookies (Aliens must have visited:D) made my mood a little better . Temperature was 72 so since I had it FULL what better reason to run it down ...went for a ride ,watched the sunset rode 20 miles with a big smile marveling how well bike runs (mood improved ) , watching a heard of deer run into the woods ,just knowing in a short time will have park it for winter. Salt and Sand everywhere well I will enjoy it while it lasts .

Fishing last touches to the X tonight. Valve cover on last night. Seems to run smoother and less chatty on top. Gas leak stopped. But plan on rebuilding carb over winter.
