Yeah I think there is a slight difference in the width of the channel in the tank up in the area near where the rubber mounts go in. I think the xj650 maxim tank is just slightly wider there underneath near the mount area

I don't think so... I've a 750 maxim, with a 750 tank, and it's still incredibly snug to get it into those rubber mounts.

    Just how they are.

Celcius. Calgary is funny; it'll look warm and sunny but be below freezing, and it's often not immediately obvious that it's cold enough to freeze as the sun will be quite warm and intense. When it's colder (-20c = -5f) you know it right away :)

The problem though is that it's easy to go out when it's something like -5 to clean something, as if you're in the sun you'll be warm... but then you risk problems with water pooling in spots on the bike and freezing.

It's weird for me, as a Vancouver boy, because the sun is considerably more intense here than it was back home. Makes a strange, confusing temperature thing where it's really warm in the sun and freaking cold in the shade.

I took my front wheel to work with me today. At lunch i replaced the bearings. I bought the medium duty bearings / seals, from chacal, xj forever. The bearings are sealed so im wondering if i am supposed to fill the void in the seal with grease. Does anyone know?

If they're SEALED..... it won't make a difference.

If it makes YOU feel better, fill the void--- with the BEST AND MOST EXPENSIVE grease you can find

I do this, and it makes me happy. I use horrifically over rated grease for everything, and even where it's not needed. I know it doesn't really matter, but even expensive grease is cheap, and I like to think my baby likes the good stuff :)

Easy there :) Nobody's giving you a hard time about it. I wasn't being sarcastic above, I was serious. I always pack everything in waterproof grease just to keep moisture out.

Bearing grease: not needed, but it surely won't hurt anything. A little bit of grease might help make installation of the seal easier, but again, not typically needed.

I will say, if it's your front wheel, be sure to grease the mechanical speedo pickup when you've got it apart.

Took off rear wheel on xj650 #2 to check brake pads for potential delamination. Whoa that left side slotted axel nut was a royal pita to get off!

Had the entire front brake system apart for a rebuild in October when life started getting in the way. Finally got a few hours on Sunday to reassemble everything.

I was concerned that the bleeding would be a pain but it only took me 15 minutes. I guess the brakes on the xj700n are not as tricky as some of the other models I have heard horror stories of.

Anyways, back on the road and loving it despite the cold weather. Its 3° C here but it will warm up when it starts raining again.

Today VERY WINDY for this area of Southern Oregon had a difficult time riding to Ashland, Or. As in bent over behind my small windscreen and angle into the wind the majority of the 15 mile ride. A lot easier coming back as the wind was behind me. The weather guessers said avg. wind was 14 to 20 mph ENE ! I don't know how any of ya'll be riding in any heavier wind though. My hats off to ya!

I regularly ride in 50-60 kph winds. I've had the bike out in 80kph gusts, but that's past where I want to be riding.

With the help of some soapy water I found the air leak in my tire. So my future plans involve taking the front wheel off and breaking bead seal to fix it.
Also called a guy today about adding a 550 Seca to the collection. The 650 needs a friend

Hah got bit by the Weather Guessers myself last night. Was supposed to just drop to 3C, actually ended up -7C with 40kph winds for the ride home. Didn't bring extra gear... Ah, gotta love that frozen hands pain after the numbness ends :)

Just got up, 7:15 am and the temp gauge says it 29 F. Damn I wanted to ride. Temperature, not a problem-bike battery toast  won't hold a charge once it gets cold. Yesterday had to jump the battery to get the bike started and once that was done she ran fine all afternoon and into the evening. Other then that looks like it going to be a great day clear and brisk.

Are you running tubes in your tires?
I have been under the impression that if you are running non-tube tires that it is best and heavily suggested just to replace the tire.
Which is basically what I had to do 2 weeks ago.

Ok, plugged the plugs together as I have attached a quick connect for the battery tender- for about 20 minutes while I was looking for my mysteriously missing jumper cables. Yesterday I had to use my sister in-laws. That being said she (XJ-700)X started right up and off to school I went. High for the day is between 50-55 F. with tonight's low 31 F.
Looks like it may between the 30-55 F all this coming week.
:D Not time to put the bike away just yet!!!!!!!!!!

    Contentious topic.

Depends a lot on condition of the tire itself, and why it's leaking. I've patched motorcycle tires before and put thousands more miles on them, but a lot of people are really adamant about just replacing tires if anything is wrong no matter what. *Shrugs* I could rarely afford that, but patching a tire is basically free if you've got a patch kit.

The tires have 200 miles on them and are about 3 months old. I’m running mismatched tires as I have a gsxr front end on my bike so I’m not 100% sure. All I know is the gsxr tire has a very small leak.

Funds make a huge difference on what gets replaced or repaired, this I agree with although on the safety side eH.
Currently I am in a position where I can just order another tire and not that big of a deal.
Years ago my life was a lot different patch and go with a prayer.

Ordered the Gunson colortune today. You can smell the richness in the exhaust of xj650 #2 compared to #1 which has been tuned in beautifully (by someone else). #2 carbs are turned out about 3 turns so it'll be nice to get it finely dialed in. Already it's a nice preppy n smooth xj so I'm really curious how all 4 are burning in there .

Had a scare this morning, Warmed up bike took off to Wally World to get some Jumper cables. While I was outside I decided to take a look at the oil sight glass and what appeared to me was milky white oil.
Like damn, I just rebuilt this last winter ARGH! Started running through what parts I know I am going to need i.e. valve cover gasket, head gasket, and a few other odds and ends. That is if a gasket replacement is only needed. Rode home 2 miles, slowly so not to cause any more damage. Drained oil and not a speck of milk in the oil pan or oil filter. What I realized is that the milky stuff is the white lithium grease I used to assemble the engine in certain areas and what appeared to happen was that the lithium grease just got moved around to areas like the sight glass were it could hang out and not cause any trouble other then me freaking out at the idea of a possible head gasket leak.
I will though keep a closer eye on the oil in case that I am mistaken.
Fill wood box then off for some much-needed riding time as the school Term is over I got 3 weeks till Winter term, January 8th I believe.

Rode to work this morning a pleasant 40 degrees. How ever when I got off of work at 7 pm it was 29 degrees. First thing that caught my attention was that my seat was covered in a thin coat of ice. Of course my cold weather pants wear at home, go figure.
Ah the adventures of winter riding.
I sure do like the thick cold air though :) bike feels as though it is leaping down the road!
