well, CAD $6/gal which is about USD $4.62/gal

still.. CAN $1.6/l is crazy. Norway is paying USD $2/l or about USD $7.50/gal

Came home from train and noticed the clamp on my dual exhaust on my truck had broke and was hanging down, fixed this and my Seca called to me "ride me" temp was 70 degrees but sun was going down , bike started right up I live in a large neighbor hood rode around several blocks felt so good doubt I will get much in rest of the year, seems like everytime weekend gets here it rains and temps below 50 degrees . Just hope it does not snow anytime soon.

I bought a new baby today. A much neglected child o’ the 80’s! I’ll need a complete harness before I attempt anything. She was disassembled for the most part and I just kinda put most things back on to see it together
It’s a true one owner bike as bad as it is

Been looking at the Carbtune Pro for while, found one on eBay bought it for 85$ got it today but it is cold and pouring rain so will have to wait to see how accurate this is compared to my 4 vacuum gauge manifold . :)

Got to play with my new Morgan 4 pro synch tool ,I was not far off worked good . But found the hose actually melted so next time will go to the heavier hose on my vacuum manifold . Took it out for a quick blast ,just wish it was a little warmer out.

Pressure wash? Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Just straight up garden hose and a healthy application of elbow grease!

Today , well last few days with all the sanding I repainted the xj900f tank for my brat build.

Dusty shed so might need to sand back with 800 and re-clear but so far so good

Moved the lil girl into the corner a bit ago after FINALLY starting the interior walls of the garage. I think 2-3 sheets every couple weeks and the project will be complete mid January at the latest. Then ALL the tanks can find their rightful place on the wall along with other moto related pieces

So far today... after spending All of yesterday trying to get gasket off the shifter/crankcase cover, finally closed that up! It was maybe a month ago I popped that open to check the springs - but work and two other projects got in the way ('70 F250 & '71 C10)

I gave up on that worthless Permatex gasket remover and picked up some of their paint remover. With a ventilated, cautious touch, that stuff makes short work of 38-year-old gaskets!

Now I'm off to the parts store to see if they might have a workable replacement for that vent hose to the airbox. Seems I only need something with one 90-degree bend. Whadyathink, maybe fuel hose? In unfortunate circumstances, oil could get in there right? I'm thinking I need something that's got a bit of resistance to harsher stuff.

I went and bought insurance today, $396 for a year. Very happy with that.
It was 10 degrees outside (50 degrees U.S.A.) and sunny
So I was pumped to go for a ride and... you know how this ends.
I was 10 minutes from home, a slow uphill aaaand the front washed out and I went down.
I have never felt like such a big idiot.
Mechanically the bike is fine, a few new scratches and I'm bruised but no big deal.
tomorrow it rains so it's back in the garage for now
    :(

Oh yeah, one more part of the story.
Before the ride, I sneaked into the wife's Christmas gift storage area and took out my brand new helmet that is my Christmas gift from her this year. And it now has scratches on the side of it.
I've put it back now in the box. How am I going to act surprised when I open it on the 25th?

and... new crankcase-t0-airbox vent hose is on!

Turns out a heater bypass hose (O'reilly part #28460) was what worked. Cut off an inch or so from each end and good to go... It's a thicker hose and tighter fit, but it works!

Tomorrow... ooh! I might start setting some carb floats! A nice stinky gassy mess that'll be!

Just came in from getting my parts bike 82 Seca 750 with a flat rear tire, off the flatbed car trailer which is parked on a slight uphill. Wife and I had to pull and strain but got it into the shop. Inventory will determine what parts I’ll keep, the rest for sale.

Phew! Just finished wet setting the carbs. Taking a 'fresh air' break before the final check.
I got lucky and the dry set came pretty close. Only mishap: Watching fuel come pouring out the mouth for a second... then seeing the float needle sitting on the table! Wha??! Hah! Not sure how I managed that!

Hey Turpentyne, I think that it was you that stated in another thread that you found a heater by-pass hose at O'Reillys to use in place of the crankcase breather, you might want to keep an eye on it, it's made from EPDM material which is strongly attacked by oils and fuels.........it may turn to mush rather quickly!

ah... damn... That kinda crossed my mind, but I told myself, "maybe nothing but air will go through and I'm fine," after I couldn't find anyplace with large enough fuel line to work, which is what I assumed was the best bet.

ok... back to the drawing board. What's the best hose material I should look for, aside from fuel line?

Buna or Nitrile, i.e. fuel hose and probably vac hose, too. If you can find a PCV breather hose with the correct configuration that would be the best.

Picked up a barn find 82 Seca 750 last month and decided to do a little lower frame cosmetics and am having a difficult time getting the rear brake light switch adjusted. It only moves 1/16” to activate and doesn’t want to retract enough to shut off the light. Anyone have any ideas?

brake switch.JPG brake2.JPG the switch body has A NUT that hold it to bracket that is how you adjust the switch by moving it up or down with the nut

also spray cleaner and dry silocone spray to lube

    edit about nut

I may need a new switch. The spring that moves it may have to be bent a little more. Movement of 1/16 inch to activate and release seems a little tight.

What did I do with my Yamaha today?

I just finished reading every post of every page in this 287 page thread! A little sad that it’s finished, but proud of the accomplishment. Today a 17 year-old student advised me not to drill a lower hole on carb boot number 4 but to instead get a carbide bit and re-drill my broken tap that I left in. He was not impressed by my temporary solution, which I thought was brilliant at the time, to clamp the top corner on with a custom bracket. Look at the bottom left of the pic and tell me if you think it will work or if I’m going to get a massive vacuum leak lol.
I think I’ll follow my student’s advice and get the best Bosch drill bit I can find and go to town on it tonight. Tonight’s other chore includes matching my eBay universal LH handlebar controls with my wiring harness. (The controls have no wiring diagram.). Then attaching my Acewell gauge. The wiring is harder for me than any other part on this build! P.S. where can I buy Kroil in Canada? I think PB blaster is the best I have seen for stubborn bolts.

I'm just glad you didn't say you were using WD-40

    I found this quote;

"Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

    Penetrating oil .......... Average load
    None ..................... 516 pounds
    WD-40 .................... 238 pounds
    PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds
    Liquid Wrench ............ 127 pounds
    Kano Kroil ............... 106 pounds
    ATF-Acetone mix............ 53 pounds

The Automatic Transmission fluid (ATF)-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix
of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this
one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about
as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price."

I read somewhere that vegetable oil and acetone mix were good too for soaking corroded fastners. Think I will try that and the ATF-Acetone mix.

The bracket has a two bends at the tips and it squeezes through a small hole in the casting. If you look in that area there are little openings.

Vacuum leak waiting to happen , dremel with carbide bit , a helicoil kit , highly recommend once you have threads fixed ,put anti sieve on the bolts when you reinstall the boot , just in case you have to remove at some point.

I haven't tried the "home brew" stuff that people are talking about but I am 100% sold on Mouse Milk. It is the best penetrating oil I have ever used.

I am starting to (again) restore my 1982 XJ650J Maxim. I did it last in 2001. I have a spare set of carbs that I will be refreshing so I can just swap out the rack on my bike with this one. If I can find out how, I can post photos from start to finish. The bike is in the garage and I will be refreshing the carbs in the basement. As always I will be experimenting with a few non-volatile types of cleaners.

Yesterday me and my wife went to new hobby shop that just opened , since we were close to Harbor Freight , I had the sale add and with me been looking at the Vicking 4 amp smart charger had it on sale at 34.00$ with my coupon made it 24$ . Got a chance today to try it out , since I have an AGM battery there is a setting for this as well as a COLD setting , already got a couple of battery charger but this one is cool digital read out when I put it on battery read 12 volts showed red 14 minutes later turned green 13.1 volts . My view this is a good charger also comes with the battery post connector , good quality and good price.

Favorite discovery of the weekend: Self-fusing Silicone tape. Cheap and heat/gas/oil resistant.

I just wrapped my existing crankcase breather tube with the stuff and threw that back on.

    Rusty bolts?
Soak in vinegar overnight,or few days, this will remove all the rust.
After, rinse with clean water, then soak in 2-stroke or fogging oil for a few hrs, seal the bolts.
Even better, heat the oil a bit, leave overnight.
Had a quad brought for engine service, apart, all the bolts were a ball of rust in a can, this worked wonders.
