    To an extent..... the X has extra wires for the fan, thermostat, temp related switches, temp gauge—-
    Otherwise, lights, controls, etc.... are the same

    Joe I think there were a couple cosmetic changes, gas tank badge I think. I don’t believe there were any mechanical or electrical differences.

    Yes it will Joe.
    On the engine, the difference on the '86 is in the pickup coil plate on the left side of the crank, and Yamaha eliminated the timing pointer. ( I discovered that when doing a valve clearance check on one). All the wiring connections are the same so you can swap them either way.

    As Simmy mentioned, all the other changes were cosmetic.
