What did you do to your Yamaha today?

Nice looking X besides those PODS, but you will take care of that.

 

I am going to split my crankcase.

 

Inside of cases need cleaned. Some dirt got in getting the cylinders off the cases. Going to wash it all out and use compressed air in the oil passages. I was surprised the cases split easily unlike that cylinder crankcase front stud and front head studs at the camshaft tunnel which would not budge. Main bearing shell looks fine as do all the rest.

 

Finally replaced my seat. In other news, I have a pretty decent XJ550 Seca seat available. (see video for details):

 

Received my parts from Len last week and finally got them in. New pilot air/fuel jets and a new bowl drain screw in number 3 (after extracting the chewed up one). Finally able to wet set them but first, throttle shaft seals.

 

Shipped my spare seat to California to have a long-distance-worthy custom made Then, I got the bike reassembled and started after 2 months of work and made an appointment to get my new tires mounted. My custom-made, wider throttle tube works perfectly! Narrow strips of plastic glued between the ribs provide stability when twisting the throttle.

 

So what did you do for the longer grips?

 

Picked up a set of Pro Grip superbike grips from a shop that was closing down last fall. About 130mm long (more than 10mm longer than what I took off), plus I added a bit more to allow for a throttle lock.

 

It’ll be interesting to see how the look/fit

 

Installed new (to me) front fender received from xHondaHack. It replaces my slightly dented up with rust spotted fender and is very shiny.

 

technically, it was last night, video coming shortly, but I replaced the clutch cover with one I sourced from Joe Eliff and polished, and a cap I got from e-bay (and polished). Gasket from Len.

The black ones are new. Grey are the old. The new are a softer rubber compound than the old ones, but I can swap back easily.

 

Finally, some love for my front tire. Always loved the spiral cast aluminum wheels on my xj650 maxim. New rubber, detailing, new wheel bearings and new brake rotor. Many thanks to Len for the carrying the parts I needed.

Not as much as I would have liked. Too many projects! I did manage to get my calipers off, apart and thoroughly cleaned. Ordered some parts from Len. Project for this evening is putting a small dent in this bottle of Buffalo Trace.

 

About 200 miles of riding. Some of it was 122 miles up Clear Creek Canyon and down through Evergreen, Conifer, and Deer Park. Great day for riding. The bike got a pretty respectable 54.2 MPG during that part of the outing (mostly 5000 to 8000 feet elevation).

 

Changed the oil and filter and some general maintenance. Short 20 mile ride to test. I think its pretty amazing how well my bike runs for being 38 years old with just basic maintenance. About 1800miles since last oil change in October. In 2 1/2 years I've put about 8000 miles which is 1/3 of its total miles in those 38 years.

 

Got my crankcases cleaned inside of the residual oil and connected my multimeter to the neutral switch and the case and moved the selector drum and the new switch is working.

 

Tore down the rest of the brake system, including the master cylinder, hoses and rotors, and gave everything a good cleaning and a close inspection. MC and calipers, along with union bolts and all the other hardware got a nice hot bubble bath in the ultrasonic cleaner. Waiting on new ss lines and a few other bits from Len to start putting the stoppers back together. Then it's on to the dreaded carb rebuild...

 

I just grenaded my clutch it's sad but I don't know if it's worth fixing at this point...

 

Yes it is, just get a new clutch.
