Jaso ma vs jaso ma2?

Hi I have an 81 xj550 maxim and an 82 xj650 maxim was wondering the difference between jaso ma and jaso ma2 can I use either or?

To directly answer your question: MA2 has a higher friction index (preferable), but MA1 should be sufficient. IIRC the splitting of the MA spec into two parts was meant to provide a lower friction oil for the newer classic bikes (90's and up).

 

Ok last question here I bought 3 quarts of 10w40 oil meets jaso ma2 specs. And a new filter is this sufficient for an oil change? I've looked everywhere for how much oil I would need to do this and I cant find a straight answer. 1981 yamaha xj550j maxim

 

3 quarts will be sufficient, but grab an extra quart to top the sump off. Ideally you want just a hint of a bubble at the top of the sightglass so you can monitor the oil level easily. If the bubble diasppears you've got leaky carbs. If it drops between rides, oil is being used or lost.

 

Ok and this bike has a wet sump correct or no? Sorry my xj650 and xj550 are my first XJS and I just got them both.

 

Yes. Wet sump. No seperate oil tank.

 

550 oil amounts
if your motor was completly drained 3.1 qt
oil filter change 2.6 qts
oil change only 2.3 qts.

for the 550 put oil in untill you just see the air bubble at the top of the sight.
when you are near the point of full add 1 to 2 oz at a time it takes a few mininutes to get where it goes

 

Ok so I bought 10w40 is that not a good idea I see your chart here says 20w40 or 10w30? Also its completely drained I had to replace the shift shaft seal. I also have a question if you dont mind giving a little advice on what to do next. I found a hole in what I think is the clutch cover I'll attach a pic and wanted to know what I should do about it. Replace it? Patch it with something? Does this hold fluid?

 

That’s the ignition pickup cover, no fluid under there but you will want to replace it as you don’t want the elements getting in there.

I was going to do that but I found a left side cover for $22 on Ebay so couldnt beat it lol. I am new to this I want to buy a scre on oil filter conversion kit for my 81 xj550j maxim from the supporting vendor but I'm not sure how? Help please.

 

And is the 10w40 ok to use in this bike I've seen a lot of people using 20w40?

At what outside temperatures will you be riding?
That is what tells you which weight of oil to use.

 

Oh ok j wont be riding till spring as I live in Michigan. So probably 60+ @k-moe

 

JB weld and build it up to fill the hole.

 

Already resolved. He bought a replacement ignition pickup cover (the clutch cover was not the part that was damaged).
