finally started my rebuilt xj650 and ran it for just a minute, all seems fine. I would like to know if there is another way of checking oil circulation as my pipe connection to the oil cooler seems stuck fast, and I dont want to force the issue?

You could remove the valve cover and see if oil made it up to the cams

    ^^ this^^
Checking for flow at the oil cooler won't show you if any oil has gotten to the cams or not.

Aye, `tis true. I should be checking valve clearances also, I may have not put shims all back in the original buckets (dropped my egg-box )

When you chake them (and sort them out if needed) make a chart of the shim size that's in each bucket. That way you can have an easier job at the next valve clearance adjustment.

When you start the engine on the centre stand, see the oil level drop in the site glass, you think - where did it go? If it does drop (as it should), that means it’s somewhere else....

Its a bit like the Spike Milligan response to the question `what are you doing here?` - -
    `well - everybody got to be somewhere!`
