I have an XJ550 that I need to replace the turn signals on - the rears are missing and the fronts are a rectangular style and one needs a lens.

I would like to replace with something that looks just like the originals, but would prefer LED's. Does anyone know of some that meet the criteria WRT shape and size while being LED?

Ah! That would work. I could track down some OEM housings and use those bulbs.

Switch to LEDs and you'll end up having to modify the flasher system because the stock flasher will not flash with LEDs.

You will also lose the self cancel feature if the 550 has one. To make the flashers work with led bulbs you will have to get an electronic flasher from the autoparts store

I'm pretty sure chacal carries the aftermarket "pattern" signals that look just like the real deal for about a third the cost.

I used "pattern" FZ/Radian signals on my '83; they "look Yamaha" but cost about as much for the set as one real one from MamaYama. Look in my gallery. (Got those from chacal too.)

Or eBay yourself a set; there are two or three (sets) floating around right now, both OE and "repop."

I use LEDs in my "dashboard" lights, everywhere else they're too bright for the lenses.

    A couple of questions:

First: would the turnsignals from an '83 Virago VX750 fit? They look the same in a pic ...

Second, is there any chance there is a flasher unit/combo that will maintain or provide the auto turn-off capability which would allow for the LED bulbs?

I'd kinda like to lower the electrical load, but not if it is going to cost an arm and a leg ... hard to ride like that.

the only way you can maintain the auto cancel with LEDs is to use a load equalizing resistor which then negates the whole "reduced electrical load" benefit you get from LEDs...

Sorry Dave. You can make it work.

Here is the topic with instructions on how to make the auto canceler work with an electronic flasher http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=13520.html
