I get 47mpg on a bone stock 1983 XJ750 Maxim. It even sprays a little gas out of the petcock so I would probably get a mile per gallon or two more if I fixed the minor leak.

I typically shift up conservatively, at 15, 25, 35, and 45, unless I'm aiming for quick acceleration.

I ride mine pretty average, mostly conservatively, occasionally I'll get on the throttle. Get about 45-50 mpg on average.

Most of my riding is in an urban area so I typically have lots of cars around preventing that type of acceleration. There have been a few occasions where I accelerated hard, revving both 2nd and 3rd up to about 9500 rpm or so, with the throttle wide open. But often, I am rolling down a 25 mph road in 4th gear ... and about 2000 rpm ...

    SLK,

I get about the same on my X but All of my driving this year has been in town stop and go, stop, creeep, stop, go no runs longers than 1.5 miles to even relax a bit. I usually hit the low fuel light about 95-100 miles. with this in town crap I hit it about 70miles and usually put in 2.2Gal of fuel per stop give or take .10 of a gallon.

    I get 27 to 30 weather I'm drafting semi's @55 or by myself@70.

My valves are a little tight. Does anyone think that will hurt milage?

first ride this season after cleaning carbs and going up one tooth on the rear sprocket. first tank was 165 miles 2.7 gal. for a nice 61 mpg. hopefully this wasn't just a fluke, lol.

Sounds about right; I got 56mpg with my '83 on its shakedown run and we was ROMPIN' at times. 16T front/45T rear (stock for the Seca.)

I regularly get around 52mpg with my '81 commuting, in more mixed traffic.

cool, that included idle time for the carb sync and i rode kinda hard for the last half tank. wasn't sure what i'd get cuz last year i got about 55 as an avg. but up to 58. this year i added windshield and saddlebags and went up to a 46T from a 45T and left the front sprocket stock. but hey, i'll take 61 or so. nice to have fun and it's easy on the wallet.

On a 250 mile high-altitude run I took last week, I was getting 47.5mpg (that's averaging about 60mph and with a lot of up and down in the Rockies). But, she was actually running too rich up at 8,000 to 11,000 feet. I've adjusted the altitude correction now and will probably make another run tomorrow to see if things have improved.

'82 XJ650... stock except for a 4-1. Over the last 1800 miles, have averaged 53.1 MPG. Lowest was 48.8, highest was 56.2. I regularly wind her to 7-8K. I am pleased!

The 46T results in LOWER gearing; a little bit more "oomph" off the line, but higher revs at highway speed. The 45T ("taller") would give you even better mileage yet I'd bet.

Anything over 50mpg is gravy to me; especially with a vehicle as much fun as the XJ550R.

My 1100 only gets about 41mpg. I've only ran about 2 tanks but I have also used some of both tanks to adjust and readjust the carbs. So I really can't get a true mpg yet. Not really worried about mileage anyway. I don't ride it to work just for pleasure.
