I know the 550 has a chain drive which would make it easy. Can you convert any of shaft motors to chain drive? Looking for the best (quickest) motor for possible project ideas.

A couple of us on the site discussed turning a shafty to a chain or belt drive. It is possible, but would involve a lot of mods. It would be easier to use a chain drive bike. I've thought about putting a R1 motor in my 700 frame, but I'd have to mod the swing arm. But I think it would be worth the hassle.

There is info and posts about which frames can accept larger xj motors with little to no hassle/mods.

Your actual inquiry is to vague.

Are you making a drag bike or think you can make an 80s heavy frame into a modern sportbike?

How fast do you really need to go with an xj frame/motor? Buy a ninja?

Beyond that trim the excess weight and listen to the motor/trans experts.

Yeah, there's really no point, sorry to say. I think if you get a 700 or above you'll go plenty fast (not that the other bikes are slow by any means) for any kind of custom cruising you need to do. If you're going for a drag bike or something like that, you're better off getting an R1 or a hayabusa or something built for it.

If you like 80s bikes how about an fz700 or something like that?

Ps just to think about---the xj700 is 550 lbs, 85 hp and the yzf-r1 is like 380 lbs 175 hp.

You have a chain drive 550 Maxim - you want to go as fast as financially possible??
Then you need to search your local Craigslist for a cheap 600 ugly college student bike. Get the motor.
Then, you need to get really serious at a machine shop and "wing-cut" the crank, add pistons and cams, all new bolts, balance ($200) add NON-CV carbs, PODS, header, and some dyno runs at $80/HR. You will be deep into some money. How fast??

    not this one
