Mounting hardware for a Yamaha Fairing

Hi folks,

I posted this on the general forum and got a couple of responses, but I really need more help. Here is the post (with some updated info).

I (with the help of a bike mechanic friend) am getting my 82 XJ650 Maxim ready to ride. I purchased a Yamaha sport style fairing on eBay which is in very good shape. I'm told it was made by Yamaha for the 650 Maxim's.

My issue is that it arrived without mounting hardware.

I have looked through most of the pictures in the gallery and have not seen this fairing on only 1 or 2 images.

So, my question is - Does anyone know about this fairing and what the mounting brackets look like. I am sure I can make a set, but it would help if I had an idea what I was trying to make first. OR does anyone have the bracket for sale?

BTW - this is an AWESOME site for info on my bike!!!

Do you have a picture of the back of the fairing? I know this is a 750 seca but here is how it would mount on my bike from the factory.

I'll try to get one up ASAP. Really busy week for me.

This helps a lot as I think the mounting is pretty similar. There are 2 holes in the bottom front lip of the fairing, but that's it. I did notice two longer screws that mounted the windscreen when I took it apart to paint, though, which seems to match up to your picture.

What you have there is a rare fork mount maxim sport fairing. It is the small version of the frame mount X1 fairing available as an accessory option on the maxim, and virago 81-83.

Here is a link in case you might need to replace the windshield Gustafsson Plastics.
Available in +4" also.

Please fully document the fairing an mount process and post as there is very little, to no available info on that fairing online.

It looks like the XJ650 sport fairing mount is the one I need. Can't really tell from the photo how it mounts, but If I have the cash next week and it's still there I might get it. The fairing only cost me $40 with shipping from ebay.

Also the Gustafsson Plastics link. Some of the screws were messed up and they do not seem to be in any shop around this area (north of Atlanta).

Now if I can just get my mechanic friend to finish the valve job, I can get her on the road!! WOO-HOO!!!

That's not a Sport Fairing that is pictured by Justiz00; that is the stock (optional) 1981-82 XJ750 Seca "bikini" fairing, evidenced by the smaller rectangular hole for the auxiliary driving light below the main headlight opening.

Notice the large cradle-type mounting bracket.....this is the same cradle as listed in eBay auction #160430504149

The two metal bars on eBay auction #400052262315 listed as Sport Fairing mounts ABA-4H702-40-00 are for the optional sport fairing (not the bikini fairing as used on the 750 Seca). That style fairing has a round headlight opening and it is really, really rare.

It's hard to tell from the pictures that RichGoody has posted what style fairing he has. If it has openings for rectangular lights (a large one and then a smaller one below), then it's the 750 Seca bikini fairing, and it may be kinda tough (and odd) to mount that on a 650 maxim, what with the round headlight and all, plus the fork-mounting points my not have the same distances on the 650 as on the 750 (never tried it).

There was a large variety of stock and optional fairings offered by Yamaha and associated mounting hardware, none it very well documented. Of course, with enough effort, almost any fairing can be "made to fit", but be careful before you go ripping into your bike thinking it's going to be a "bolt-on" job!

 

If you look closely at the second pic that RichGoody posted you can see the rounded corners in the headlight recess. No lower light opening as it sits flat on the toolbox, and the exact same styling lines as the X1 fairing that i recently purchased leads me to believe that it is the Maxim sport fairing.

The fairing in the pic by Justiz00 is indeed the seca model fairing for the 750 as evidedenced by the aux light opening. I have seen that fairing refered to as both a sport, and bikini fairing.

Well, maybe!

The sport fairing uses this truly strange mounting system; those long, bent mounting bars come up thru the fairing body (directly under the windscreen). And the "snout" (headlight opening) on the sport fairing protrudes outward (like someone lopped off the nose on an elephant's trunk!) rather than the laid-back, sloping frontal area as pictured by RichGoody. The X-1 fairing----a/k/a the Worlds Largest Fairing Ever----is actually much more similar in design (but about 8900 times larger) to the bikini fairing, and has that sloped, wind-breaking styling.

 

The fairing I have has the round headlight opening only. My mechanic bud tells me his Dad had the same bike and fairing back in the days when it was actually new. I should have a few extra minutes this weekend to take a shot of the "inside" and post that.

I'm pretty sure from your descriptions that mine is the "rare" sport fairing made just for the 650's.

Thanks Ghost! I ordered 2 sets of the nylon nuts & bolts. from Gustafsson Plastics. Now if I can just figure out the mounting...LOL. I will post as to how this will be accomplished. I have already taken off the windshield and given the fairing an initial black coat of paint. I will try to get shots of this before I continue.

If you could post some pics of the inside of the fairing I would be able to comfirm the mounting. I believe that it will use that mounting brackets posted above for the 650 sport fairing.

RichGody, I believe you have a fairing for a an 82 XJ Seca and not a Maxima. I just took mine off and am attempting to attach a picture of the bracket on the bike now. Maybe wrong but I don't think so.

 

I'm pretty sure that this fairing was made for the Maxim 650. My mechanic bud tells me his dad had an 82 650 (new) back in the day and also had the same fairing on his, soo......

any way, I finally got shots of the inside which I am attempting to post here. One is "standing up" on it's nose, one is upside down and the other is the only label on it.

I have removed the windscreen for painting. I roughed up the surface a bit with steel wool and 600 grit wet sanding. I also have the first 2 coats of black paint on it now. There will be more picts to come.

Yes, that IS the factory sport fairing!

 

That will deffinately use the mounting for the 650 sport fairing in the ebay link I gave you.

Note to Chacal: Further research into the bikini/sport differences.
Bikini fairing covers the headlight, and guage cluster only. Sport fairing extends out to cover the handle bar/grips.

The first says it is for an XS650 on the instructions and the second says it is for the XJ650 in the description. I sent a message to the 2nd seller asking for clarification, but no response yet.

Do you have any idea if either or both would work?

Get the one for the XJ650 Maxim.......the bars are bent differently for each model and will have differing locations for the mounting bolt "ears" which use the upper and lower steering bracket fork tube cinch bolts.......
