Sure will. (Fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/O ... brand=YAM#) Same part number.

However, it won't go in from the back.

You'll need to pull the carbs and the starter. You may need to drop the exhaust system, undo the front motor mounts, and let the engine "sag" forward in the frame as well.

I just did this, I got it in without lowering the motor or taking the starter off by taking those rubber boots off the motor. Total PITA job, I'm going to cut the air box in half and make a way to connect it once it is in the bike this winter.

find a 550 Seca instead of a matching Maxim; they're tons o'fun and 100lb lighter.

Dude; they're everywhere, just gotta dig.

Check out MY long-term project (blew 150lbs compression across the board so I bought it)

It needs basically everything. But hey, it's complete, and it can run although it pukes gas all over the place.

As for Seca 550s; I fell in love with this one, which now has ~9000 miles since resurrected:

So I HAD to do another one; it now has ~6000 miles on it since the resto:

Now how could you possibly want a MAXIM??? You need another Seca. Or two. (Everybody needs at least 3...)

    CHAIN DRIVE.

    SIX SPEED GEARBOX.

10K RPM REDLINE. You can get illegal in 49 States in 3rd gear and you've got 3 left. Accelerates almost like a 2-stroke especially through the first 3 gears.

407lbs DRY. A FOOT SHORTER THAN THE 650.

Upgrade the suspension and the brakes and go look for some twisties. Sticky tires help (Avons on the black bike.)

But it's solo bike unless you have a lot of 102lb girlfriends. However, as a "personal transport device" the 550 Seca has no equal in my frame of reference. Fast, smooth, comfy (especially if you get your seat brought into the 21st century) and I'm getting 52.5 MPG from the black bike riding it back and forth to work, 120 miles a day. An R6 for old dudes.

You know you want one. The black scheme is original for '83, they dropped the fairing.

(They come in Maxims too, if you need something for the "other half." But she'll blow your doors off in a standing 1/8 mile.) http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=32168.html

There's a 550 in your future, I can smell it...

Jesus Fitz, now I want one, and I want 'to do one' now. only thing is, I'm a racer, and race bike maintenance won't allow me the time to do it right. one day, one fine beutiful day

Man, I love a clean Maxim. Have you seen Lt. Dave's white one with the red "flaming tuning fork" emblems on the tank? I'm just too tall for one myself.

THIS: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=32168.html was my post, don't forget.

What I AM is a bit of a 550 Partisan. The very original XJ was a Japanese-market 398cc XJ400, styled exactly like the 550 Seca without the fairing, that came out in '78 or '79, well ahead of the "Americanization" of the design. It was virtually a 550 Seca, but a 400. So the 550 is a direct descendent of the very original XJ, ahead of the shaft-driven bikes that came along two years later, even though the shaft-driven 650 Maxim was the first XJ brought here.

I'm trying to talk him into a 550 for his "significant other" so she can leave him in her dust.

Man have we gone off-topic. I'm gonna try to look up Lt. Dave's bike. But if his is as nice/spotless/perfect as yours, I might not be worthy to share the asphalt with the pair of you! I fear you'd frown upon my heap. 8O

I ride around to lots of these local towns but haven't made it to CowsPigsChickens... yet. Tonight, my VIP (very important passenger) and I rode from home to Memphis via Rattle Run and sniffed around their fair for about 2 minutes but then went to Richmond and ate Taco Bell food, then went down Palms and saw the sun ready to set over Anchor Bay and took M29 back home. A very nice ride!

OK, something about airboxes, I'm due to open mine up and check the filter. Gotta do that soon!

no he's not trying to convince me-- he already did.
the logic is undeniable. If I un across a good deal on a maxim with good compression fine but the 550 seca is the prey Im hunting.

get illegal in the first three with three left? come on with that
    and the direct decendant thing--+1

Ya gotta watch the acceleration though. About an hour ago, after I'd just got done washing off all the crud from riding in the rain for two days, I went for a ride to blow the rest of the water out of the nooks and crannies.

Where I live, as you head out of town, the speed limit goes from 35 to 45 to 55 all within about 300 yards or so; the signs are in sight of each other.

The St. Clair County Sheriff said I was doing 60. I pointed at the 55 sign (right adjacent to where we were standing) and reminded him that 60 in a 55 is traditional. He said I was "still in the 35 part." I argued that I was "transitioning" from the "45 part" to the "55 part" maybe a tad prematurely. He said he liked the bike; and didn't give me a ticket. Suggested maybe I should use compressed air next time.

    It's been an interesting morning.

I was sanding the tank last night getting ready to paint and your black 550 wouldnt leave me alone. I love my 650 but now Im sure Im gonna stick to secas and the 550 has got to be my first pairing. Honestly I can't see how you can have one bike and be "all good?" I got about 700 I can let go of right now without making the wife actually upset. I dont think that will do it yet, but my a game is on. Not gonna forget about 650 by no means, she's my "Eve". I didnt know the Maxim was smaller or the seca was rarer. well thats a done deal
