I just reinstalled my header pipes and after I torqued the pipe flanges down I noticed there was some pipe showing behind the flange and the flange was not up against the head. Is this right or did i not install it right?

Here is a link to the picture, I cannot seem to be able to get my photos into the gallery yet, I will figure it out yet, but for now here is the link:

As always any input is appreciated! Thanks.

It's hard to tell in the pic, but it looks like the header flanges didn't "seat" in the head, and instead snagged on the edge of the ports. The flanges go INTO the head, and seat against gaskets: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29356.html

Did you replace the gaskets? Did you dig the old ones out first, or assume there weren't any because they didn't appear to be there?

Fitz, I did dig out and scrape the old gaskets out and cleaned the ports out nice and clean. When I went to put the pipes back on it seemed to me they did not seat properly, but the end of the pipe does seem to be up against the exhaust gasket and the pipes are tight against the motor. I just noticed that i could see a bit of the header pipe showing between the flange and the motor, wasn't sure I'd the was all right or not.

Well, you're gonna find out as soon as you start the bike.

Both of my 550s and my 650 don't have that much pipe showing; maybe the 750s were slightly different.
