    Thanks guys!

And I'm down for a cbus xj ride sometime this summer. I'm on the north side near 71/161. We'll have to set something up once the snow melts.

Winter updates, new MC and stainless steel brake line.

Also did some fine tuning with the jets and got the carbs dialed in perfectly (yes, with pods...don't see what all the hub-bub's about with pods...tune your bike for your set up, end of story.)

Now this ugly beast is on the choppin block

    just 2 q's for ya
how much did the build run you?
and how much do you charge for labor...?

Sorry for not getting back to you, been slammed at work. I bought the master cylinder off ebay, just made sure the bore, etc. was the same. Something along the lines of this. Seems to be working just fine once I got it bled. I also bought a SS brake line on ebay, built to the length I wanted.

I probably have about $700 total into the build, including the $300 I paid for the bike. Haven't really kept good track though. Don't think I'd be a good candidate to work on someone elses bike as most of my time was spent doing things 2-3 times to get it right or because I kept changing my mind...but that's what it's all about, learning as you go :)

I just want to ride but it f'in snowed in Columbus AGAIN today.

Anybody can weld. Take practice but you can do it. Thinner metal is harder, easier to burn through.

It's been a while since I posted any updates. Bike's running good, just been riding the piss out of it when it's not raining here in Columbus. Have made a few changes:

New starter button (right beside a beautiful pod :D )

    New mirror and mini speedo
    [IMG]

Relocated rear signals to top shock mount, they didn't stay tight in the frame rails:

Also took my MSF basic course a couple weekends ago, learned a lot, but am scared sh*tless that some of the people in my class passed...especially the ones that had a hard time shifting to 2nd. Highly recommend the class. I've ridden dirtbikes my whole life but some of that doesn't translate to well to street :D

thanks guys. Didn't really buy many parts aside from engine parts (from chacal). Bars, mirror, signalsand tires all were bought at Iron Pony here in Columbus. Bars are just some $25 drag bars that mount same as the standard bars, Mirror is a emgo (sp?) bar end, signals are $15 mini stalks, mini speedo was off ebay, same with new master cylinder. Running shinko tires, mounted and out the door for around $100 for the set. Seat was just made with an old street sign and camping pad and vinyl recycled from the original seat. Made the tag/tail light mount, rear fender mount and signal mounts from steel I had. Starter button is from radio shack, $3 push switch.

    82 maxim project :: Winter 2012 update

I took the opportunity over winter to do some maintenance and freshen up the old motorbike.

I fixed a small oil leak, got my valve clearances in spec and upped the jets in my carbs as I was running a bit lean.

Since I put a big dent in the tank last fall, I did some bondo work and repainted with duplicolor metal specks "ocean blue" Going to let it cure for a few days then I'll hit the tank & fender with spray max 2k clear.

Also decided to ditch the side covers as they stick out with my small seat. I had to shorten up the wiring loom and am just waiting to pick up my welder extension cord so I can weld up the new battery/electronics box which will be right under the seat.

Hope to have it back on the road in the next couple weeks...weather's been awesome in Columbus and I just get to watch all these other people on their bikes while mine sits in the garage in pieces.

The starter button is just a momentary switch from Radio Shack...think it was about $3.

Thanks guys. Took the main jets up to 116 and the pilot to 41. We'll see how it goes once I get it back together. Hoping to have a good chunk of time this weekend to finish it up.

For your new battery/electronics box have you looked into the LiFePo4 batteries? They are very small and should tuck up under the seat nicely. These are the same batteries they use in the lithium-battery cordless tools. I am planning on doing this to my bike some day.

Here is a link to a seller on eBay that manufactures some specifically for motorcycles. The eight cell unit is enough for a 650cc engine. I found this seller while doing research on these 1 1/2 years ago. There may be more sellers out there now but this will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-cell-A123-mot ... 295wt_1094

Here are the specs from the eight cell page:

Specification of A123 Accupacks (4S2P NO connector)
    Voltage: 13.2V
    Capacity: 4.6AH
    Configuration: 4S2P, 8 cells

    The Dimensions:
    Lenght: 106 mm
    Width: 53 mm
    Height: 72 mm

Weight: This Battery only weights 655 gr., which is 1.44 lbs !!
Cable Length: 15CM out of battery ( without a connector)

That battery looks interesting, but think I'm going to stick with the one I have, because it's already paid for :)

Getting closer on finishing up the battery/electronics box. Just need to paint and mount:

Pretty stoked about the way the new battery box turned out.

Just need the weather to cooperate so I can get clear on the fender and tank and she'll be ready to roll.

Appreciate the kind words Skillet! In the middle of moving so my garage has been overtaken but I managed to get the carbs synced and took her for a spin yesterday. Done for now and back to wrenching on the XS once we get moved:

the bike looks amazing, this is an inspiration to my build right now. how hard was it to jet the carbs and did you mess with the pilot at all? I'm new to pods and carbs, but i understand that slashing the exhaust off and putting pods on you need to re jet and set the carbs

i would like a few more details on how you have your seat mounted up if you wouldnt mind. trying to find a way to make mine look "plush"

great looking bikes by the way, yall should bring the orange and blues down here to alabama during football season. you would get a hella ton of waves from the college kids haha

LayItDown - on the seat, I cut it out of an old street sign and bent it to shape. To mount it, I welded in a piece of flat steel right in front of the frome crossmember in the back. I put 2 bolts through the top of the seat before upholstering and drilled corresponding holes in the flat steel. Also, fabricated a "tang" to slide under the spot where the original "tang" fit under the tank. You can see the flat steel, as well as my fender mount on the below photo. Please disregard the crap welding...I hadn't touch a welder in probably 10 years when I did this.

An here's the seat when I was shaping it:
