Almost done with my maxim. Time for an oil change, I'm just curious to see what oil everyone suggests as well as what rear oil. Was probably gonna use Castrol 10-40 synthetic. And Castrol 75-90 synthetic for the rear. thoughts?

Is there a reason not to use synthetic? Also what then do you use?

Synthetics and current automotive oils are literally TOO "slippery." Both have a habit of causing starter clutch and drive clutch issues.

Motorcycle-specific oils do not contain the same friction modifiers and thus are recommended.

The factory recommends 20W40; that can be difficult to find. You can use 20W50 with no issues. Motorcycle-specific conventional oil like Castrol 4T is widely available.

I just read this from another post...
    http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Oils1.html
I'm not arguing, just know a lot of ppl who swear by amsoil or rotella t15w 40 Synthetics for motorcycles. This article seems to support synthetics.
    I'm torn between Castrol 4T and Rotella T 15w-40

I'm not picky about oil in the bike as long as it is Castrol 4T 20w50.

Amsoil synthetic motorcyle oil, 20W50 with not issues. However, unless you are really rough on the engine I think any brand name 20W50 motorcyle oil should be fine. I wouldn't put any non-motorcycle specific oil in my bike.

This has been discussed in several forums, my choice is Rotella T, 15-40 non-synthetic diesel. I buy it by the 18l pail from Canadian Tire or WalMart when it goes on sale. I've been using it for years (during the summer) in several cars, both bikes, a 12cylinder jag etc without any issues.

Rotella is a favorite of many here I believe, and meets motorcycle wet clutch requirements.

ONE of my XJ's can't tolerate synthetic, (the 900) but the other (750) can.
It's the starter clutch that slips, not the tranny clutch.

But other people's XJ's have different issues,

Which is why the only "safe" advise is to say " DINO JUICE " for everyone.

For those willing to experiment, be ready to dump your expensive AmsOil out almost immediately, and replace it with some Rotella - T.

I think I'll just go to autozone and see what oils they have. Rotella or Castrol sound his to me. Any specifics for the rear?

Correction (because I just changed my oil/filter) the big "pail" of Rotella T 15-40 is 18.9 litres which for the non-metric folks is 5 US gallons.

Okay guys, thanks to everyone who input on this discussion. I just got back from the stores.. as per fitz I got the Castrol 4T, but after I got home I realized it is also synthetic!? So looks like I'm going synthetic anyhow. As for the rear, I got Vavoline 75w-140 full synthetic gear oil. Again Thx to everyone :)

Hope the synth works out for you. Just be prepared to do several quick oil changes with mineral oil at the first sign of starter or drive clutch slippage, if it does affect your bike then the sooner you get it out of there the less chance of damage...
