Oh mighty wizards of XJ knowledge. Could one of you bestow upon me the tightening pattern for the bolts on the valve cover of 85 XJ700? I'll try to attach a pic of it's newly glorious condition. Thanks. Karl
Oh man, also I'm having trouble attaching a JPG file. Can't figure what I'm doing wrong. It's a great pic, But I'll get a better one and hope someone can set me straight.

VALVE cover? Not the head itself...

    "Airhead" YICS motor?

Snug down the center four in an "X" pattern. Snug down the outer ones as pairs, (two on each corner) in an "X" pattern.

Then tighten to no more than 7.2 ft/lbs. The bolts have stop collars, the things you fought to get the new donuts over. You did replace the "donuts" right?

(Your pic is probably too big...)

Cool thanks, That's what I did, but 7.2 ft/lbs is so little I get paranoid about my tork wrench cause it just gives a tinny hint that you are there. But I think I'm good. Can you tell me what are those two little bowls, about 3/8 diameter bout 1'2 inch deep just by the forward bolt of the intake, and there's a little gap that the gasket doesn't cover?? I cleaned some crap out of them but can't make any sense of why they are there. Yes indeed I replaced the donuts, let me see if I can get that pic up.
Thanks again! I would be so lost without you folks.

Suhweet! Check this out; how I did mine: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=22125.html semi-flat black with gloss in the highlights.

I filled in with red on the "naked" valve cover on my '81.

I've got a spare cover with the "ground" lettering and I was thinking about flat black w/maroon fill. The possibilities are endless.

What's cool is that on the bike with the tank on it looks as though the lettering and stripes go right on across. A real "hot-rod" look.

    Nice work.

Those "two little bowls" are blanked-off drillways from the manufacturing process and the gasket doesn't go out between the top of them and the bulge in the cover because it doesn't need to. They're there on the 550s too; probably a result of a production-driven change after the castings were already tooled. Beyond that I have no idea.
