Here's the seat I cut down and had re-covered for my '81 650 Maxim, the original was in pretty bad shape and I wanted something a little lower. Let me know what ya think!!

Thanks! It took a little elbow grease to get her to this point. It has some rust in the tank that needs to be addressed and I would like to give it a paint job but right now I'm to busy riding!

Have you noticed it being any less comfortable? I've been thinking of reshaping mine, but I'm a little leery as I only have one seat. I do need to get it recovered though.

I don't think it's uncomfortable at all. We all know there is a ton of padding with the original seat so there is plenty to spare if you want something lower. Just take it little by little untill you get the desired look and feel you want, I'm definitely glad I did. :D

    HI Matt,

    Cool bike...

Whose pipes are those? Still available?

I'm curious... how did you cut that seat down?

I've looked under mine... have an xj750, so it may be different?

    Thanx-Peace,

    PY

The pipes were on it when I bought it so I'm not sure where they came from, they do however have a great sound to them. If anyone out there can tell, I too would like to know where they came from for a possible replacement in the future. As for the seat. I first took off the old cover, then with a magic marker I drew on the foam the shape I wanted. Then I cut and shaped it with an electric knife. My only suggestion is, if you are going to do it, make sure to take your time and it will come out fine. Good luck!! Next project for my bike...a paint job to match the seat!

I really like the "Flames" stitching ...
    Nice touch!

What does it cost to get a seat recovered? Is it possible to do it yourself? I actually have an extra seat, so i could foul one up and not feel too bad about it.

Thanks for all the compliments! I paid around $80.00 to get my seat re- covered. I think you can get them cheaper if you don't have the stitching done. I also think I have seen replacement covers for these sweet bikes in J.C Whitney but they are made to fit on the original seat, so if you cut your seat down they won't work.

i've begun to seriously consider getting the seat reshaped. I've had to pull off a couple of times to "eh hem" readjust, from sliding forward. They needed to make the seats slope slightly to the rear to avoid the forward slide and perhaps they should have shaved a little off the sides, but that's just my opinion.

I re-contoured my seat. That playground slide effect had to GO. Now, I have a lot more room (and I need it bad) ... and, there's no sliding forward.

There's already a pic on here someplace.
