5 minutes is a bit of time for it running on the battery alone. You can bring the ec (choke) to idle rpms and run it for a couple blocks under load to bring it to operating temp faster. Doing this won't hurt it. Just saying.

Gary - yeah that'll be the plan but right now the electrics / seat etc are all off so can't ride it! Trying to get it into riding condition before the weather gets too cold here.

Another question. I really want to remove the stock exhaust and put something maybe a 2-1 or just something that's more brat like. Any good after market alternatives for this bike?

K-moe informed me that there are a couple companies that sell complete aftermarket exhaust systems for these bikes (I thought Mac was about the only one). I can't remember if he named them. The Mac system is on eBay.

Moved on to clip ons - can't work out if my forks are 33 or 35mm - what size are they on the maxim 400? My tape measure is inches so hard to measure mm (I know I need a new one)

Dial calipers will tell you with style though.

If you have neither, use a length of string to wrap around the fork leg, mark it at the overlap, and then measure between the marks on the string using a ruler.

Mathematics will tell you radius and diameter. Anybody for some pi?

Yeah, but just measuring the string won't.... You have to use algae bra.

I'll just use the calipers..... I'm not a mathemagician

I assumed there was a measurement in a service book I don't own but should!

There probably is, but since so few of the 400s were imported you might have difficulty finding one. Then there is the issue that there are misprints in almost every service manual ever printed.....

As mentioned, circumfrence/ 3.14 will get you the diameter of the fork legs within the tolernace that you need (they all come in 1.0 mm or 0.5 mm increments regardless of manufacturer).

I've got lots of work to do this winter - but cables / zip ties are a mans best friend so I make a temporary seatpan setup and hit the open road before the weather got too cold. As long as it stays mild I'll be riding it as is. Then it's a complete strip and build up.

A problem from a while back hasn't been resolved. The headlight is bright with the key in but as soon as I hit the electric start it goes dim. When I'm riding it flickers bright when I hold in the clutch. I can't ride at night currently. Could this be a grounding issue?

Sounds like it may well be .
I would not rule out regulator either..

The brake light is fine. So I don't think it's the regulator. I'm going to do some ground testing

When I had a bad voltage regulator the lights oscillated bright-dim about the frequency of a cop car light.

From dealing with boat trailers and bad grounds, I highly recommend coating all electrical contacts with a generous plop of dielectric grease before connecting.
Always keeps great contacts, the corrosion away and the dielectric properties keep it from shorting out.

Yeah. I did. I'm planning on clip ons but no one here can tell me my fork diameter :) (I just need to go get digital calipers)

we would only be guessing at that but
XJ550 Seca fork tubes are 35mm OD,
it does look like a seca style front end

my maxim 550 is 35.84 mm which probaly means 35.5 or 36 mm with the +_ tolerances

Any updates on the bike?! Just found this thread, and man I'm glad I did! I'm about to embark on a similar journey with an '83 Maxim 400 except I plan to do a cafe racer.
