I've recently purchased a 1982 Maxim 650 (g?). PO said ran when parked 12 years ago. Motor has good compression but the carbs sat with that lovely mid-west gasohol in the bowls for all that time. They are in sad shape. I've had to soak them in chem-dip just to be able to disassemble. All 4 diaphragm upper retainer rings are split and I do not trust the diaphragms themselves. all 4 starter circuit plungers were seized (came loose after soak). I'd image ir the rubber was not toast from sitting that long all, it is after that soak.
My question is simply, what is the most recommended source for rebuild parts? I've found the Flea-Bay kits for $40.00 for all 4, but they do not appear to contain throttle shaft seals, or transfer tube seals.
I really aprciate the help and I plan to do a build thread at some point ( I already have over 80 pics).

To add a bit of an explanation, Chacal (XJ4Ever) is extremely reliable for parts. For example, I purchased a clutch lever from Amazon that "fit my bike," according to the website. It didn't. I turned around and ordered one from Len and it fit perfectly. Anything XJ specific can be purchased from Len without worrying about the fit and knowing you will get excellent service. Things like fuses, headlights, and bulbs can, of course, be purchased locally.

Off subject, but how would I go about adding a signature to my profile (year, make, model of my ride). I looked for a few minutes and could not find that option.

The diaphragm retaining rings are supposed to be split. That's how they can be put on in the first place; just like a piston ring.
If the diaphrams have no pinholes or tears, and are still flexible, they will still do their job properly.

I read here the upper ring will split on the Hitachi carbs. Seems that split would be a good place for a leak and all the pics I've seen online have a solid piece.

I found replacements that do not use the rings. Can't recall the name off the top of my head. They are aviation grade rubber with a 'bead' that sits in the groove of the old piston. Around $20.00 each. Good thing I got the bike cheap, because the carbs are going to close a couple hundred o rebuild right.

What all do you recommend be replaced? Could you be bribed into building a list? Carbs are... well.... Rough.

Actually I'm not a dummy (maybe). My recollection is that Hitachi used different types of rings at different times. There is a flater solid type, and a round spilt type.

Since they can't be used as-is, go ahead and tear them down, order parts after you have evaluated things.

    IN THE CHURCH OF CLEAN

Rule of thumb: All rubber parts, except the diaphragms. All other parts will depend on condiion.

Clean EVERYTHING before determining what needs to be replaced.

Then, order your list from Len.

I don't order parts anywhere else.

Installed them on a members bike last summer and found them to fit very well and had no issues tuning the bike. Just make sure that you orientation is correct because they do not have a pimple to align them. the 2 air holes in the slide MUST face forward

Another question. on carb #2, the jet needle (one attached to piston) separated from the plastic nub that sat on the end. This means I will be replacing the needle, should I replace the jet as a pair?
What is the wisdom regarding jet replacement?

Is the needle jet worn? If the hole is still round it does not need to be replaced, but can be if you have it in your budget.

I have been using jbm diaphragms in my 650 and FJ1100 for 6 years or more and they are great! They are a tight fit. Regarding the carbs, replace whatever you can afford, if the engine is low mileage, less than 60k, don't replace the brass bits, just all the O rings and rubber bits. Things like the rubber choke plunger seal on a high mileage engine can harden oblong and mess with your idle.

That's exactly how my carbs looked on the '82 maxim I just purchased. I ordered the $39 rebuild kit off eBay. Ill let you know how it works out.

If it's the kit I'm thinking of, it didn't work out well at all.
