opened up my first set of hatachi carbs. bowls full of green gasoline, floats still moving
found the air jets had a cover over them may be the carbs are not original to the bike I thought this part was discontinued.

And you can't just install the rings. You have to measure and set the ring gaps before they go onto the pistons.

Ah yes the ring gap another item to the list a one or two day turn around for the rebuild is not looking like its going to happen. Back to square one.
Now I get to pull the rings off the pistons and then put them into the cylinders to measure the gap. Thanks for the reminder.
Any idea of a good set of ring compressors ? I have two but I am unable to work around the rods from the lower engine housing to the cylinder head

Just finished a quick how-to about installing rings. It is more involved that I realized, having assumed they came ready to install from the manufacturer. This is why I love this site. I learn something new all the time.

Yes, there is a sort of 'J-shaped" plate that is above the two air jets.

    Your fingers.
The bottom of the cylinders are chamfered so the rings can slide in.
You can also use a set of worm-screw hose clamps backed with strips cut from a cerial box.

Went for a short ride today to take the gf her phone charger. As i turn onto the street hit a patch of gravel frontend slid and down i went. No real damage to me except a little road rash on my shoulder ( thank you helmet never ride with out one) and only real damage to the bike is i scratched up my right side yics cover that i spent so much time polishing. Still im lucky be careful everyone and watch out for gravel lol.

Be careful, and get a set of case guards. They show up on Ebay for between $60 and $100 (depending on style and condition) all day long.

Finally installed a new valve cover gasket with new grommets. Checked the valves and had to replace only one shim. Also, finally after 5 years I finally got that damn valve tool to work. For some reason it only works if I let the valve bucket move up about half way before installing the tool. But honestly, I think I still prefer the cable tie method. Sync'ed the carbs and took a nice ride. 8000 miles before the valve cover comes on again! Feels good.

Also, when I had the valve cover off for today I noticed for the first time ever a hole in the cover on the left intake corner and in the right exhaust corner with matching holes in the engine. In wood working dowels are used like that to make sure everything is matched up properly and I guess these could be the same things. However it doesn't look like anything has ever been in them. Any idea why they are there?

For the reason you think. There should be metal roll-pin looking dowels, but they aren't absolutely necessary.

I mostly went and did some lazy riding, with a short dirt excursion. This lake was nearly dry not too long ago. Now it's full.

The ride back sucked though. Winds came up from the south, so I was riding in a 30 MPH crosswind for 40 minutes.

I don't think any of the XJ engines use the locator pins (although there's no reason they couldn't use them....). I think their earliest appearance is in the FJ600 engines.

Ah the joys or reassembly- I mean this no room for ring compressors fingers worked great just took it slow and used plenty of oil in the cylinders and rings. Just finished up the cam assembly and installing the carbs. Cams took awhile, remember this is my first time so I wanted to make sure they were lined up. off a tooth one way then another. Ah they are in and I rotated the crank several times no resistance other then expected. As I mentioned carbs on throttle cable choke now just the little stuff radiator exhaust fuel tank.
Hour here hour there should or hopefully be riding by this time next week.
Thank for all the advice to those who have posted to this site.
And a big thank you to Chacal order Wednesday have it by Saturday !
Oh also rechecked my valve clearances and all are with in range-actually right next to max limit just the way I wanted them. No valve adjustment for 24,o00 miles!
    Have a good Easter

That's what I thought. But there has never been anything there since I've had the bike. I may check my spare engine and see if it has them. Seems that all those 12 bolts and grommets should be sufficient.

Limped home- When did you realize that you put diesel fuel in? You didn't have to clean the carbs? Looks like you got real lucky on that one.

This weekend, I cleaned up the gas cap and replaced a couple of parts, then rebuilt the petcock. I've run out of reasons to postpone tackling the carbs. They should come off tonight, if all goes well.

When trying to figure out where my ticking noise is coming from, discovered (not the cause) that I've got a valve cover bolt that was literally falling out. Why? Because it was completely stripped, and someone attempted (badly) to repair it with a helicoil. Helicoil firmly attached to valve cover bolt, just sitting in the hole but in no way threaded anywhere and the bolt threads a nice smooth shaft of "lol this aluminum used to be part of your engine!"

Now I need to add "repair cylinder" to "need to check valve clearances."

    *cries softly*

What type or year do you have? Does the valve cover bolt thread into the cam cap? Just asking cause that's how mine does on the xj700x. Right through the valve cover and into the cam cap.

82 xj750. Yeah, the valve cover bolts thread into the cylinder head. Clearly the last guy tried to fix it after stripping the head, but failed. I need to look into some better thread inserts, give fixing his botched fix a go. Fortunately the valve cover isn't seriously torqued down,so maybe I can find some more success.

    Congrats on getting yours running!

Yes as soon as I got home from school I moved everything out of my way and got the bike out for a ride at dusk. Oh was it enjoyable, as mentioned before need to fine tune a few things to tidy her up. Either I had forgotten how she pulled or she is running Hella good because she pulled all through the gears and RPMS. Not balls out but nice and steady. Quick jont onto the freeway 3 miles then off the freeway. Looking forward to Thursday when I go for a ride over the Oregon/California pass to set the rings. I think my elevation where I sit is about 1380 ft. and the Siskiyou pass is close to 4,310 ft. This should be enough to put a load on her and set those rings.
Going to run her up to 70% of peak power then back off for a bit then run her up again. I am not going to sit at one speed and cruise, my understanding is by just cruising at one speed does more harm to the engine.
Also every time I stopped I got aroma of freshly painted engine parts LOL, Seems to be holding together (the Paint).

Do a search for how to use a wire or zip-tie to hold the valve open. Simple technique.
