Can't say I've any issue with vibration on mine at 5k (thus cruising around 120kph) but I've no idea if that's just personal opinion or not. Always found my 750 was surprisingly smooth - the benefits of an inline 4.

If there's got room, maybe try a slightly larger rear tire? That'll get you more speed per rpm by changing the ratio.

As far as I know, there's no easy way to change the final drive gearing, but others are more likely to know better.

Thanks for your comment. I thought about a larger tire, but affects would be minimal AND just got new rubber. I'm actually getting aching/numbness in my hands and thinking it's in part due to vibration. I'll comment back once I get my new grips installed.

I got some grips like that at my local dealer. They're "Royal Enfield" branded. I think they were 12-15 bucks:

Talked to the current owner of the XJ550 Seca I hope to buy. I plan on heading out to get it later this week (it's about 5 hours from me). Pics once I pick it up.

Oh, by the way, I'm Bill and I'm new here. LOL

    Welcome!
Bought my bike as "inexpensive, easy to operate, learner bike"... after 4 mos. now I don't think I will ever sell it. Good performance and classic bike looks... hope you enjoy yours as much too!!

I've ordered grips and going to do the butyl injection tonight. (sounds medical) Thanks for the feedback. If I can cruise at 110 without vibration issues getting into my hands, that eliminates my need to #findanotherride for long distance.
    Cheers,

I was expecting that the front brakes were going to be the original as you can see from the first pic they are replacements. :)
the second pic is of the new going in.
The third shows why one needs to do periodic maintenance. As I can tell by the wearing of the brake pads that the left font is not working properly.
I for see a caliper rebuild for both sides very soon.
I did however clean the calipers and various other pieces followed by some brake lube grease were applicable.
Yeah it only took 15 minutes from start to finish.

I checked the valve clearance. I just got the bike running this weekend . A week or so ago I changed 7 shims and so Ive started it quite a few times an d I wanted to see if it was still where it needs to be. Its close, a bit sloppy on one of the exhaust I could slide a .009 in it but with lots of drag on it. I need to get my manual on this computer so I can find out how to do the cam chain tension check/set and the timing.

Couldn't stand the high pitched squeal from the rear brake so I took the brakes off and look what I found.
IMG_0142[1].JPG IMG_0143[1].JPG Pics are of the front and back side of the shoes. Tried to use 220 grit to sand off the glaze but I think it is going to have to be turned on a brake lathe. Now the question is where, being as auto centers lathes are not big enough I am looking into truck stops to see If they can do it.
Yeah fun times and yes I ordered new rear shoes already and will be here by Monday the 12th.
Besides it is supposed to rain for the next two or three days.

Is it me or when ever I take something apart I find myself spending more time cleaning up that area then I do doing the repair?

I so often get distracted that way ... Hey, I should paint this while I have it off the bike... Oh, theres a bunch of old grease and grit over there...

I never wash my bike, but it's weirdly always clean.

Funny that you mention this as I have a couple of them. Didn't give them much thought cause I thought I may make the drum out of round.
I did find a Semi truck repair shop that has a lathe that will handle the entire rim and tire. They are doing the turning today, price unknown ?
I will keep that in mind the next time I have to do this. Which I am hoping is like never.
I noticed a few rims on E-bay are like the front rim in design and they are 4lbs lighter then what I have now. The shipping was more then the price of the new rim LOL.

As for the turning of the rear drum. I took a drill attachment with 80 grit and just went around and around till the glaze was gone. 10 minutes.
The shop said they could do it although they would have to remove the bearings.
I told them that I bring it back later on after I get a bearing removal tool and new rear bearings. I was thinking about when I had them replaced and that was 15000 miles ago.
So I will try again later when I get the proper tools and as I said new bearing.
Unless I get a xj700N rear rim which probably would need new bearings anyway just be safe.

That article about the true cost of maintenance rings like a church bell in my head every time I do maintenance. LOL
regardless I love my bike and wouldn't trade for anything. :p

Is this the only place on tire that has a spot like that? Have you been running over those painted white lines while hard on the throttle? I would guess it is normal wear if only in one spot. These is no cupping on the tire?

New grips came in today !!! Installing tonight and pumping the bars with caulking. Tough to find a specific butyl Rubber caulk. Looks like rain gutter caulking is as close as I can find.

no those marks go all the way around the tire both sides same area of tire- no cupping.
The first 10 or 15 minutes is just normal riding letting the tires warm up a bit. Avg. temp when I go to work 45+ F. Usually only hard on the throttle, by this I mean from a stop light to 10,000 rpms through 4th gear by then I am well above the posted speed limit then I shift and let her get down to posted and this is at about 445 am going to work on a smooth road. Tire pressure is 32psi front and back.

Gorgeous sunny day - days after storms are always awesome days - so took a ride out to the local bike shop and ordered a complete engine gasket kit. I'll finally be able to do my valves(been afraid to pop the valve cover until I had a new valve cover gasket on hand), and it'll get my largely disassembled Seca engine together so I can do some compression testing on it too. Good times ahead!

Yesterday in 95' air temperature with a heat index of around 100' F. I rode the 83 XJ650R Seca on an Advanced Riders Course. The bike rode like a dream, not over heating, braking well, and I did not drop the bike in the tight low and high speed maneuvers. I drank over 3 liters of water without revealing myself, shirt was soaked when I got home,

Oh! I'd been puzzling at why I never have vibration in my handlebars without anything like this, then I remembered: I added rubber washers from home Depot. They were just $0.80 each, bought half a dozen, put two under my risers and one under the tree.

Depending on how your handlebars are attached, it's likely worth doing.

    https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.716-rubber-washer-1od-116thk.1000147912.html

Those where the ones I think. Readily available at hardware stores.

Yowser, glad you are getting it replaced.

I found a nail in a perfectly good tire while cleaning, adjusting the chain, but tire had not yet lost pressure. Thank God for chain drive so I found it in the garage rather than at 65mph!

Rode the turbo 30 miles very early Sunday morning. I wanted to ride further but my left knee was screaming for relief! I'm 6 ft tall and while this bike perfectly fits my 5'-4" girlfriend, it's too cramped for me but it's a blast to ride when the boost needle is swinging past 15PSI!!

Sadness! Got out this evening for the nightly ride to work, and after starting was greeted by angry OIL indicator. Shut her down, popped up onto the center stand and sure enough, practically no oil. This is curious as it doesn't burn oil or leak...

    Well, didn't leak.

I didn't have time to find exactly where it's leaking from - it's left side for sure, appears to be from the left side transmission cover, as the bottom half of the engine on that side is just soaked in oil.

Upside is, on Thursday I ordered a complete engine gasket kit, so as long as this is just a (severely) failed gasket I should be up and running again soon.

I took mine home at lunch and drove the car back because they were predicting rain. Now it cleared off completely.

If I had ridden my cycle, it probably would have poured cats and dogs!

oil drain plug can leak replace the crush washer. oil filter housing can leak use a smear of black rtv to seal it apply it let set up and torque it down to proper setting.
oil sensor can leak it has an o ring.
for those with a mechanical tach the part in the head can leak replace the 2 orings.

shifter seal, out put shaft seal. list goes on
then it could be the valve guide seals too

being as I replaced my front brakes I realized that the left caliper is not working.
Decided to take it apart in the hopes that it just needs a good cleaning.
Currently unable to get the pressure cups to pop out, any suggestions?
I do have them soaking in PB cleaner currently.
