I bought this bike cheap and rode it home . It ran and started fine. It was in dire need of some tlc. I started tearing it down to replace and refurbish parts . The stock fuse box only had one glass fuse in it,the rest of the wires had been stripped and wire nutted together. I replaced the stock fuse box with one that uses modern blade fuses. When I went to test it the starter button will no longer work and the bike won't start even jumping across the solenoid.

During the tear down I found this wire that was white with a red stripe. It had been stripped down about 1/4" but was hooked to nothing.I believe I've traced it to the keyswitch but cannot locate where it goes.I'm thinking this is the problem and all I have to do is figure out where to hook this wire up , but cannot find a accurate wiring diagram for a 1983 Maxim 750 that shows a white wire with a red stripe.Does anybody know offhand where this wire goes.I want to get the bike starting and running again so I can get back to fixing it up.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with your no-start problem.

That is for the battery monitor. Without it hooked up the bike will run, but you'll get a warning light.

    It goes like this.

Putting a resistor in allows you to use a maintenance free battery and retain the low battery acid warning light, but turn it into a low battery voltage light.

Based on your diagnosis, you need to pull the starter and replace the brushes (clean and re-grease the planetary gears too). Start a converstion with Chacal; he has the correct rebuild kit in stock.

completly wrong fuses in your box

start by checking the work you did.
are you getting voltage on the qd input side of fuses?
when you turn on keydoes your headlight come on?
    horn work blinkers blink?
bike will not turn over even if you bridge the solinoid nuts look at that positive battery cable and crimp looks suspect to me
do you have 12 volts at the nut and starter when you push the starter button?

It is an 82 (I just got the title) . It turns over fine when you jump across the solenoid, just no spark. Lights and everything come on with the key, but when you hit the starter button everything dims like it supposed to but the starter doesn't spin. Thanks for the info on the wire. The guy I bought it from said he couldn't figure out the warning light. I'll add the resistor this week.

clean the right control inside; the light is not diming it is shut off when you press the starter button because the starter button is the headlight contact when released. no headlight relay.

then test the solinoid of course it could be the safety systems shutting down the starter relay
start by pulling the sidestand safety relay near tci has blue marking

How do you bypass the safety relays to test to see if that's the problem?

to bypass sidestand relay you just remove it
if you want to bypass the starter safety switch you unplug the relay and put a jumper from red/white wire to red/yellow (may also be red/white)wire. this will put power to solinoid and should turn bike over when you press starter button.
also unplug the black white wire at the tci unit should be a rubberboot about 3 inches from tci this is the wire that the sidestand safety relay grounds out to to prevent starting (should not be affected when ssrelay is removed

look at the clutch safety switch in clutch perch see if it is coming apart if it has failed you can go into headlight bucket and unplug it this will cause the bike to only start in neutral. you can put a jumper lead across the connector in headlight bucket( it is green) this will allow bike to start in gear with out pulling in the clutch lever
1982-84 XJ750 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models:

Flasher: near the steering headpipe, on right side frame rail, under the right side ignition coil.
Flasher canceller: under the rear of gas tank.
Starter motor solenoid/relay: attached to and behind the battery box.
Starter/Ignition cut-off relay (no color): behind self-canceller, under rear of tank.
Sidestand (kickstand) relay (blue): behind the left frame side cover, on the plastic regulator-rectifier mounting plate.
    Headlight relay (yellow): not used.
1982 XJ750 Maxim safety relay single diode: outside the main wiring harness bundle, in the area just behind the fuel tank.
1983-4 XJ750 Maxim Diode block: inside the headlight housing.
Neutral switch: in a hole in the bottom of the crankcase, just "outside" of the oil pan, on the bottom of the engine, up inside a recessed "well".

if you look on page 28 (24 on paper) of the fsm for xj750J you will see wiring diagram for starting system. note the starter button apears in 2 locations because it controls headlight

    starter relay is solinoid

back in the day, the easy solution for that wire was to put it to the + of the battery and forget it
